Michael D. Benefield, 49, of Sandusky and formerly of Elmore, Ohio, died suddenly Monday, April 9, 2007, in his home.
He was born Oct. 17, 1957, in Toledo, to Leslie and Irene (Underwood) Benefield, now deceased. He was a 1975 graduate of Woodmore High School, after which he entered the U.S. Marine Corps. Michael worked as a stock handler for Ford Motor Company in Sandusky for more than 20 years. He was a past member of St. Paul Trinity United Methodist Church, Elmore. He loved the outdoors and participated in athletics. He was a first degree black belt, and had taught Tae Kwon Do in Elmore for a period of time. He also loved his dogs and his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Benefield of Northfield, Ohio; stepson, Russell Lawrence of Sandusky; former wife, Diana Benefield; brothers, Ken Benefield of Genoa, Larry Benefield of Gibsonburg, Ohio, and Ronald Benefield of Oak Harbor; sisters, Monette Croll, Elaine Gerkensmeyer and Becky Hoffman, all of Elmore, Pat Helmeci of Atlanta, Ga., Shelia Jensen of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Criss Benefield of Birmingham, Ala., and special friend, Doris Gonzales. Mike is also uncle to 21 nieces and nephews and great-uncle to 16.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in Crosser Funeral Home, Elmore. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Paul Trinity United Methodist Church, Elmore, with The Rev. Rick Stumer officiating. Burial will be in Clay Township Cemetery, with full Military Rites given by American Legion Post 279, Elmore.
