Lawrence R. “Whitey” Chaffee, 89, of Huron, died Friday afternoon, April 6, 2007, in Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk.
He was born on May 31, 1917, in Norwalk, to Bert and Flora (Lyons) Chaffee, now deceased, and lived his entire life in the Norwalk-Berlin Heights-Huron areas.
He worked at Norwalk Furniture until 1981 and enjoyed 25 years of retirement along the Huron River. He was a past member of the Norwalk and Huron VFW posts, Norwalk and Vermilion Eagles Aeries, and played in many dartball leagues in the Chaffee 1950s and 60s.
He is survived by his nine children and their spouses, Thomas (Anita) Chaffee of Fredericks, Va., Patricia (Larry) Cole, of Havana, Ohio, Lucinda (Willard) Slone of Louisville, Ky., Cathy (Frank) Carrico of Norwalk, Helena Grossback of Mansfield, Ohio, Timothy (Cindy Lackey) Darrow of Garland, Texas, Debbie Massie of Fort Smith, Ark., Ronald (Carrie) Chaffee of Huron and Steve (Dora) Chaffee of Berlin Heights; numerous grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Arvela Streaker of Bellevue; many nieces and nephews; and loving friends at Franklin Flats and many others.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Richko-Darrow), whom he married in December 1957; children, Larry “Bingo” Chaffee, Harold Chaffee and Margett, in infancy; brothers, Charles,Carl,RichardandLeonard; and sisters, Blanc Weinert, Lavada Cook and Florence Burras.
There will be no visitation. Services are being handled by Hinman-Tanner Funeral Home, Berlin Heights. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Milan Cemetery.
