Ralph S. Matso, 80, of Sandusky, died early Saturday morning, March 24, 2007, in his home, after an extended illness.
He was born Jan. 30, 1927, on Kelleys Island, and was a graduate of Kelleys Island High School. He had been employed with the former Philco and Barr Rubber companies in Sandusky. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Matso was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Castalia. He was a very active member of the Sandusky Power Squadron; a member of the Sandusky Maritime Museum, where he served as a volunteer; and a former Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and metal detecting.
Mr. Matso is survived by his daughter, Jan (Jack) Behrendsen of Port Clinton; his sons, Gerald A. (Joyce) Matso of Maumee, Ohio, and Eric R. Matso of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren, Rene, Elizabeth, Victoria, Jessica, Keli, Heather and Jared, and one great-granddaughter, Rian; his sister, Gladys Dye of Sandusky; his brother, Eugene (Emma Jane) Matso of Sandusky; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne E. (Koehler) Matso in 1993; his parents, Joseph and Mary (Tomko) Matso; and brothers, Lloyd and Russell Matso.
Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, with Pastor Robert May, of Kelleys Island United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron.
