John A. Bakewell, 83, of Huron, died Sunday morning, March 4, 2007, in Stein Hospice Care Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 13, 1923, in Brownsville, Pa., and was a 1941 graduate of Brownsville High School. He drove a truck for Belford Trucking Company out of Tampa, Fla., for many years and always enjoyed trucking. He was also employed as an insurance salesman with Western & Southern Life Insurance Company for 10 years and as a salesman with Foster Chevrolet for three years. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army, serving under General Patton at the Battle of the Bulge. John was a very patriotic man with love for his country and fought hard for his country and our liberties. He was a good husband and family man. He loved to travel and enjoyed history, boating, cars, hunting and trapshooting.
Mr. Bakewell was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church and attended Sandusky Community Church of the Nazarene in Sandusky. He was a life member of AMVETS Post 17, VFW Post 2529, and American Legion Post 83.
Mr. Bakewell is survived by his wife, Norma J. (Horner) Bakewell, whom he married March 21, 1980; five daughters, Mary C. (James Kellam) Bakewell of Sandusky, Roberta (Chris) Wiedle of Clyde, Susan G. Bakewell of Vermilion, Patty (David) Veverka of Sarasota, Fla., and Joanne (Jerry) Collins of Tiffin, Ohio; a son, John A. (Donna) Bakewell of Milan; stepchildren, Douglas E. George of Cincinnati, Kimberly D. Boyd of Nebraska, and Debra L. Richardson of Sandusky; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Peggy Rorden of Huron; and a brother, William (Elizabeth) Bakewell of Maryland.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janis R. Ryan; his parents, John and Mary Ellen (Weiss) Bakewell; and a brother, Harold Bakewell.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday in Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, and from 10 a.m. Friday until services at 11 a.m. at Sandusky Community Church of the Nazarene, 4013 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Pastor David Flack will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Scott Cemetery in Huron.
