Dean W. Sheibley, 71, of Sandusky, passed away late Sunday morning, Dec. 24, 2006, in his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 14, 1935 in Fostoria, Ohio, where he attended Fostoria St. Wendlin Catholic Schools, graduating from the high school in 1953. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Detroit in 1959 and a master's degree in chemistry from Oberlin College in 1964. He was employed by NASA from 1959 until retirement in 1994, with 35 years of government service. From 1959-73 he worked at Plum Brook Reactor in Sandusky and from 1973-94 at Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, from 1973-94. For the last 10 years, Dean was the project manager on the power generation and energy storage system of the International Space Station. He holds 13 U.S. patents related to batteries and energy storage systems. He was working as a consultant for NASA on the Plum Brook Reactor Decommissioning Project at the time of his death. Throughout the years he enjoyed traveling with his wife and his many friends. He especially loved the lake and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Dean was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Sandusky, where he served six years on the elementary school board and two six-year terms on the parish finance committee. He also had served six years on the St. Mary High School board and nine years on the high school finance committee. He was an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society from 1980 until the time of his death. He served as the northeast district president from 1996-2003. In 2001, he was the recipient of the Top Hat Award from the Society. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Bishop Machebeuf Assembly 813.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Louise (Royer), whom he married May 7, 1960; son, Francis (Deborah) Sheibley and two granddaughters, Danielle and Hannah of Kissimmee, Fla.; daughter, Anita (Jerry) Bausch, twin grandsons, Kyle and Mitchell and granddaughter, Isabelle, of Powell, Ohio; sisters, Carol Sheibley of Gowanda, N.Y., Jeannine Sheibley of Fostoria, Ohio; three nephews and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Violet (Stoudinger) Sheibley.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, where prayers will be 9:40 a.m. Friday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. The Rev. Marty Nassr will be officiating with co-celebrants, the Rev. Frank Kehres and Deacon Milton Opper. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Sandusky.
