That's a nice $466,000 home you've got there on Kelleys Island, Mr. Tremmel.

It'll be a shame if no one is allowed to live there.

Erie County's health department has sent a new letter to Martin Tremmel, assistant director of the state health department, declaring that he's in violation of the rules and regulations for household sewer systems.

The letter outlines possible sanctions if Tremmel doesn't improve his system, including declaring the property a nuisance and "requiring compliance before the house may be occupied."

Tremmel said Wednesday he was a bit startled when he learned the health department may not allow anyone to live in his island home.

"I think anyone would be a little surprised by that," he said.

The home is located at 117 Ward Road, on the north side of the island.

The Feb. 9 letter to Tremmel is the latest step in an ongoing dispute between Tremmel and the Erie County Health Department.

It began when the health department discovered Tremmel made changes to the sewer system at his home without obtaining the required permit.

Pete Schade, Erie County's health commissioner, pointed out that Tremmel sat until recently on the state health department's Sewage Treatment Systems Technical Advisory Committee.

That means Tremmel is one of the state's top experts on sewer systems.

Tremmel conceded he "probably" should have known better, but he has said failing to get the permit was an oversight.

He said he promptly applied for a permit when the mistake was brought to his attention.

Read more about Tremmel's sewer woes in Sunday's Register.

"Previously, Tremmel worked as an infection control health educator in Erie County, and as the health commissioner for Seneca County and Huron County."

Did the locals know this gem prior to the sewer incident?

Tremmel conceded he "probably" should have known better, ............................. oh, pleeeezzzzz!  Sounds more like he thought he was above reproach, that he could do whatever he wanted and no one would "dare" question him.  Just because he has money and houses on the Island doesn't make him any more special than any of us when it comes to the law.  Read it and weep, Mr. Assistant Director.

Oh the rules do not apply to him. He thinks he can get away with anything because he is employed by the state. I don't think so. He should be the one to go by the rules and get everything correct not BREAK THE RULES as he is doing.

"That's a nice $466,000 home you've got there on Kelleys Island, Mr. Tremmel."   that is a lot of money for a vacation home.   what is his main residence worth?  did he win the lottery or did he get a large inheritance? anybody ever wonder how some who go and serve in congress or some high public office suddenly become overnight millionares?

Does this mean the other building he uses for a rental can't be occupied until the sewage is fixed? The rental is on the same piece of property as his house.

Stay on top of this Mr. Shade!  Tremmel has quite a reputation for disregarding the rules that apply to others. He is known to extremely rude to his island neighbors. Attempted to build a huge fence to eliminate a neighbor's view of the lake. He ignored the permits needed for that fence. He had a septic moved without the necessary permits. He is suing the village to get his way about other things. He seems to think rules don't apply to him and his answer is to disregard them and/or sue.  He should be held to the same as the average person and since he knowlingly violated the rules he should be held to a higher responsiblity since he did not do this out of ignorance but rather arrogance. Please follow through on this Mr. Shade.

He knows the rules. He just feels those rules don't appy to him.

Remember he is a chosen one.
