Erie Co. Commissioner Tom Ferrell doesn't do email
Feb 06
2012
Erie County Commissioner Tom Ferrell Jr. says he has never sent or received an email on his government account -- tferrell@eriecounty.oh.gov.
"I don't even have a password," Ferrell said. "If I have commissioner business and if I want to send an email, (commission clerk Carolyn Hauenstein) sends it out."
The Register recently asked Ferrell and county commissioner Pat Shenigo, who are both running for re-election this year, for all emails pertaining to the race.
Shenigo, along with county commissioner Bill Monaghan, has allowed the Register to search all emails on their public and private accounts.

Truthfully I don't care if Mr. Farrell can email or not....I only care of if he can govern. Apparently he hasn't done too badly at that as I haven't seen anything severe in his past that would lead me to believe he can't (unlike Taxpayer and his friends who are strict Republicans and believe only Republican's have answers.)
Since the Erie County Commission is divided into three seats, Mr. Farrell is not alone in his deciions and therefore will not be making lone decisions, I feel it safe to say that his one out of three decision making processes so far cannot be frowned upon that badly.
I see others on here who stronly disagree with that point of view which is their right.
As I have said before, I do not take orders from any part: Democrat or Republican, but vote by what I see in a candidate. So I will reserve my final decision for the voting booth.
However, at this time, I am open to what all the candidate have to say and if Mr. Farrell has maintained such a record as he seems to have done for so long, he cannot be too bad at his job. At least not in the eyes of the majority of the people who live in Erie county.

When you have a problem you can contact Tom Ferrell and he will listen, the other two run and hide.

Tom and Sam have my votes. I don't want 3 of the same type commissioners.
3 Plum Brook members.
3 Yacht club members.
3 living behind gates or exclusive communities.
3 "born into" money.
No, I will vote for a regular joe like me.....FERRELL & ARTINO.

You can talk to Tom, the other two, only if you have money ! They are out of touch. I guess it's money talks and the rest of us are just horse splat on the road, Tom is not like that he is local and really cares I have called them all, and only Tom ever ask for more info, the other's never bothered to return a call nor did they seem willing to engage me on the street ,I saw Tom at a car show I stopped Him and he let me discuss my question right their!. So TOM you have my vote just because you treat me like I matter Thank You ! I must have screwed up with the other two, I should've E-MAILED my concerns then they would have jumped right on and been concerned also .I went through the wrong channel I went the personal way, which must of been the wrong way, ?

As to holding a high exec level position, you have? Oh heavens, let me guess you were king tur& of shi* island .. my business experience has taught me that no one who thinks so much of himself would ever be trusted in any kind of executive position. You may have been in lawn maintenance but you probably never got high enough to tend to the shrubs! hahaha oh it hurts!!! Where are the Smith Brothers?

Tom Ferrell may not e-mail because he does all his dirty business behind closed doors. Tom used to meet with Kevin Baxter at Hooters in the flats (Cleveland) with Tom's brother Jeffand other leaches on society. They do there dirty deeds behind closed doors not on the internet. They are fairly smart crooks.

Thumbs up, is right, Tom Ferrell !!
Obviously he is making contact with everyone that he needs to, or he wouldn't still be hangin in the office like a rusty hook!
Tom handled a situation for me with a very swift response. I called, made an appointment, he listened, and before I left the building he made a couple calls, and problem solved. Who needed an email?
Look on the bright side, if Tom is not tech savvy, this is one less politician that will make headlines for emailing naked pics to craigslist, or accidentally tweeting photos of his Anthony Weiner!

Oh the humanity, where does Mr. Ferrel get off refusing a free government provided service. Doesn't he know milking the government is the new American way? His position as commissioner is equal to a CEO of a major multinational corporation. Ahh wait a minute, he is just one of three commissioners in a county that is one out of 88 in Ohio which is just one of 57 states. So maybe he isn't that important, but his actions would be like welfare recipients refusing welfare. So Tom at least come up with a password like MOONBATS which pretty much sums up those people who finds no e-mail reprehensible!!!!

Aw, give him ANOTHER term so he can FINISH what he started......TWENTY-FOUR years ago! Ha! Ha! It appears his performance as an "entitled" and "special" county commissioner runs parallel with his firefighter career. After all, before firefighters had ultra high frequency radios, they used hand signals to communicate to each other. You would think a person who CLAIMS to single handedly bring $106 MILLION in assets could do a better job in communicating, as a government LEADER, than use smoke signals. Ha! Ha! Oops, I can NOT find that $106 MILLION in assets for the PEOPLE anywhere. But, I sure can feel the bane and torment of that $115 MILLION in Erie County DEBT. That does NOT include that record breaking 0bama federal DEBT. The reason why a lot of you are critical of the Register is because YOU voted for Ferrell term after term and do NOT like it when someone PROVES you were WRONG! That's right, YOU voted for him over and over again, for almost TWENTY-FIVE years, a quarter of a CENTURY of total FAILURE. If you liberal democrack losers really appreciate that $115 MILLION in county DEBT, then give him another term for more. We have plenty of money! You know, exactly like a president. If YOU enjoy that extra $5.2 TRILLION in federal DEBT ($1 TRILLION = $1 MILLION x $1 MILLION) then give 0bama another term. "I DESERVE a second term, but we're not done" (Barack Hussein 0bama to Matt Lauer, NBC Feb. 2012) Oops, YOU and your children have plenty of money for more liberal FAILURE because I guarantee you, I will NEVER pay for this county DEBT, nor will my children. I will bestow that honor and pass that yoke of disastrous and severe DEBT to YOU! Come on brain surgeons, STOP your liberal, crybaby, loser whining, MAN UP and PAY!! What is the definition of insanity? "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." (Albert Einstein)

Kottage Kat, your reference to the SR being like "Gladys Kravitz" was hilarious! "ABNER!, There's a commissioner not using his email account! ABNER, look!!!!" (You have to be of a certain generation to get this reference pertaining to the TV show "Bewitched".) I am not a fan of Tom Ferrell, but it sure seems like the Register definitely has an agenda regarding certain people and entities in the county and city. Just look at the flattering photo they dug up of Farrell to use! This paper has gotten more sensationalistic and tabloid-ish since Westerhold took over, that's for sure.

6079 Smith or something close to that ... you seem to love to find some rediculous reason to disagree with people. How in heavens name can you compare an Erie County Commissioner with the President of the whole country? You seem to troll these comments, making silly references and off the wall comments of your own, and you then delight at negative responses! ( | ) Have you always been like this or did your mother slap your behind once in a while?
Any public servant would do well to communicate. It helps people understand what you do and makes reelection much easier. Any Erie County Commissioner should have a simple job answering or sending emails, not at all like the President of the United States. Also, the time spent communicating is just as valuable and important as the time spent doing your job!
As to the SR reporting such, I appreciate knowing which elected officials are adverse to using modern tools.

When I do not get on my e-mail for a couple of days, I have tons of useless e-mails. I can only imagine how long it would take a public official to answer his mail on a Monday. Public officials e-mails address's are out there for all to see. Probably every little complaint that someone has is sent via e-mail to his office. It only makes sense for someone to sort through them and let him know of important issues.

Big article in todays paper about Sandusky Police leaving details out of initial reports.Because they want to show the Sandusky Police in a Negative way they claim that they are the only department in the area that write reports in this format and that it is illegal? I know for a fact that the Sheriffs Office and every other police agency does the same thing on a daily basis! Some things in some investigations need to be held out until the appropriate time so that the investigation as a whole isnt put in harms way.The News Paper again writing BIG Breaking News if they can put a negative spin on it to pad their mission. In this case to discredit the Sandusky Police Department..

I'm not writing that execs shouldn't be in communication, just that mundane duties should and must be deferred to subordinates.
Division of labor.
Also, in our litigious society, execs are increasingly putting fewer decisions in writing in order to protect their *ss.
It's much harder to have a cell phone conversation used against one in court.

Sandusky area really has more going on than who uses e-mail, what about , Oh lets say a break down on crime, and who and where it's happening. grab some real news, and report it, I for one am tired of reading about what happens in Texas or PA, or NY, What is happening here in Ohio that affects me, That is news, not petty e-mail crap, Reporter's get out and dig ,that's what I pay big money for to read things that I need to or should know. You guy's need to STOP using the wire services for quick news and get out and get local, that right thier shows the internet makes lazy people if it makes news people lazy what is it doing for our leader's ?

We should care how people working for us communicate. Communication is one of the key ingredients to a successful organization and it is not static – it is ongoing. Therefore, communication needs to be efficient. Just like everything else in an office, construction site, or manufacturing facility…everything needs to be streamlined and efficient. What is the most efficient means of communication? Returning calls all day and getting into a two way conversation – where other issues that the main issue arises spontaneously? Two-way communication can take triple the time than the time taken to answer an E-mail. Not only that, but some citizens may have the same concern – therefore, they could be answered simultaneously.
We absolutely should care how efficient the admin side of the house runs. You may think communication is one of the simplest things in an organization – when, in reality, it can be the most complex. This isn’t a “small detail”. Even if it were, leaders must pay attention to small details. They add up very quickly.
6079 Smith W says: That is an antiquated perspective. Proactive leaders and successful organizations truly do not run business that way anymore. That is why executives carry technology with them everyplace they go…so they can stay connected and communicate their words themselves. Smart companies use their administrative assistants wisely.

I don't care if he uses e-mail as long as he's responsive to the citizens he represents. The type of communication is a mute point.

SaraTonin: Excellent points.
LivinOnTheLake says: Well, if you have nothing to hide and are doing business ethically - - one shouldn’t worry if they have an E-mail account or not. Elected officials must be accessed by the general public either via E-mail or snail mail. Either way…the communication is in writing. Public officials most likely don’t stay on the phone all day talking with people.
I think having the admin assistant sending out his E-mail is an abuse of his power (and….quite pathetic). This isn’t a Fortune 500 company. If I sent an E-mail to his E-mail address…and I knew he wasn’t acting on them (reading or replying personally) - - I would never vote for this person.
Technology isn’t a fad. Leaders need to keep up with it to some extent. Generation Y will have very little appreciation for this…and…they are a large voting demographic.
07:47 AM
LivinOnTheLake says
For an elected official or someone making public-sector salary, this is probably a good move not to have email correspondence. Then, the media has alot less to attact people without email on. I'm sure Jim Tressel wishes he didn't have an email account about right now. He lost his job over emails.

Marcus ... your criticism of the SR is unwarranted. How can anyone hold a public office and be unwilling use email to personally communicate? Apparently Ferrell is proud of not using email and that indicates to me, at least, that he's not willing to step into a technology that is universally embraced and certainly not suitable to hold a public office. If I wanted to communicate with his secretary, I would have voted for her!
