Hubert A. "Newfie" Bartlett, 85, of Vermilion, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at after a lengthy illness.
Hubert was born July 5, 1926, in St. Johns, Newfoundland, and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 62 years, moving from Canada.
When Newfie first moved to Vermilion he worked for Falbo Construction, and then he owned Bartlett Construction Co. for more than 30 years.
He was a life member of the Vermilion AMVETS Post 22, American Legion Post 397, VFW Post 7576 and International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 18. He enjoyed socializing and, most of all, his lifelong Labrador companion Skippy-Doodle.
He is survived by his daughters, Ann (Gary) Dowell and Christine Bell, both of Huron, and Cynthia (Bill) Wilson all of Vermilion; son, Hubert J. Bartlett of Huron; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Ivy Gruchy of Sandusky, Betty Noseworthy of Delaware, Daphne Dzonkowski of Maryland, and Fern Delamater of Huron.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith (nee Paulson) Bartlett, on Sept. 9, 2008; parents, Hedley and Emma May (nee Ash) Bartlett; brothers, Bertram, Angus, and Vonnie Bartlett; sister, Annie Audrey Bartlett; and infant siblings, Olive Lela and Jacob Bartlett.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South St., Vermilion. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Riddle Funeral Home. The Rev. James Peter will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery,Vermilion.
