Area young people are apparently drinking too much, and a local health department wants to find out why.

The health department has launched an online survey aimed at determining the main reasons for the problem.

The survey is part of an effort to combat drinking by underage young people and encourage those of legal drinking age to consume responsibly, said Stacey Gibson, coalition coordinator for the Prevention Partnership Coalition at the Sandusky County Health Department.

The survey is part of a four-year, $150,000-a-year grant the health department received to target alcohol use among 18- to 25-year-olds, Gibson said.

"We were one in 12 in the state to receive this grant," Gibson said. "We received the top score."

The mental health board for Sandusky, Seneca and Wyandot counties obtained the grant for the coalition.

There's data that suggests the grant is needed.

Statewide about 66 percent of the people between 18 and 25 report drinking in the past month, and the figure for Sandusky, Seneca and Wyandot counties is about 74 percent, Gibson said.

"With this age group, half of the population is still underage," she said.

Hey Sandusky County, stop WASTING $150K in TAX DOLLARS for more liberal FAILURE trying to figure out WHY your youth drink too much.  A few here have great advice, common sense and TRUTH that did not cost a penny.  Here is a tip.  You might consider trying to figure out your CANCER problem before any drinking problem.

Did the $150,000 get split 12 ways?  Or did all 12 get $150,000?  $150,000X12=$1,800,000 wasted.  They drink because they want to and have not had good parental guidance.

$150,000-a-year grant the health department received to target alcohol use among 18- to 25-year-olds, Gibson said. this truly is a waste of money. it is legal for 21 through 26 to drink. one drink leads to another and then you get drunk followed by a hangover the next day. a few bad hangovers might cause some these people of all ages to stop drinking. i think that it was dean martin who once said that he felt sorry for people who never drink because when they wake up in the morning, that is the best that they will feel all day.

Why they drink? Um...they are teenagers? That is what teenagers do. Why is the "target group" 18-25?  Last I knew 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 year olds are LEGAL to drink!!! DUH.  They are of age and (most of them) at college.  Talk about a waste of $150K .........many other more important things that $150K could do.
