Erie County Sheriff Lt. John Longbrake
Perkins Twp.

A Erie County Sheriff's supervisor has been given a five-day suspension after he failed to respond to a rape case.

Lt. John Longbrake, a 29-year veteran, has filed a grievance fighting the unpaid suspension, scheduled to be served from 10 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Friday.

Erie County Sheriff Terry Lyons and Capt. Paul Sigsworth said that at 4:21 a.m. Nov. 12 Longbrake failed to respond to the home of a Castalia woman who was bloody, scared and saying she had been raped behind a bar on Ohio 101.

Longbrake, they said, instead sent a deputy with three years of experience to gather evidence while Longbrake relieved a dispatcher.

Longbrake defended his actions in a written response to Sigsworth, saying while relieving the dispatcher he was taking 911 and other non-emergency calls.

Kurt, not everyone can be a "squared away" Marine like you.  In fact a few old timer Marines that I know are nothing like when they got out of Paris Island.  Can YOU fit into your dress blues?  I do agree with you about being in shape while collecting a premium salary from taxpayers.  There used to be a fitness program with the city, but it was "negotiated" out from being mandatory.  In other words, if you don't want to do it, skip it.  Don't believe me?  Take a look around and see what you are paying for at the city and county.  Even PPD has a few "heavy duty" officers.  I do not expect everyone to be "born again hard" like coming out of boot camp, but they do need to address their appearance and their own individual health issues.  It is for the good of their families, loved ones and themselves.  It does cost more in health care to PAY for over weight or corpulent individuals.  Being overweight is a guarantee acceptance into serious health issues.  Until they admit it, they will continue to have taxpayers PAY for bigger uniforms every six months.  You are right, if they do not get into shape, the next step will be to go to Nielsen Canvas for tailored 10XL uniforms.

As a Marine it is hard 2give this "guy" any respect when he is FAT.

The public pays the wages for law enforcement, yet police are allowed to be out of shape?

How about getting in shape & save OUR $$ on health care we pay for you?

FINALLY!!!!  It has been about time that Longbrake and the rest of his night shift cronies (exception of Sgt. Hammersmith) to quit sitting on their union contract and not doing their jobs.  You guys act like you have it sooo damn bad.  Maybe we should post your contractual earnings on here, it is public record:

http://www.serb.ohio.gov/sections/research/web%20contracts/08-MED-10-116...

While he may have supervised and delegated the responsiblity to another deputy, the shift commanders generally work the middle of the county so that they can back-up the surrounding deputies.  Now, seeing that this 3 year rookie needed the experience with sexual assaults, wouldn't a prudent supervisor go out and mentor his subordinate while handling this call, to make sure he does it properly and maybe give him some pointers that he picked up in his 29 year career?  Wow, that would be an idea.  Does it sound like a maybe a supervisor myself!??!?  It's not like as a shift Lt. you have that much on your plate.  Let go ahead and pull your shift record for the night and see exactly what you did beside sit out at the Mason Rd. Court house all night.  I'm sure that drive to Margaretta Township would've put to many miles on you SUV though... you were probally just doing a cost effective analysis right!  Good for the Sheriff and Sigsworth for no longer taking the status quo any longer.  First Klepper, then Longbrake and now Pearson.  Sounds like trimming the fat to me.  About time!  Just remember ECSO employees, you are giving a bad rap to the other 95% of guys there that do an EXCELLENT job!  Way to go.  Don't forget, there is a line out the door for people wanting you job... start acting like it!

Longbrake is a good man.  One of the few at ECSO that I believe is honest and trustworthy.  There probably is more to the story and that is why he is filing a grievance.  However, if he is in the wrong, admit to it and return to work in a few days.

Ok really? First off,  "A Erie County Sheriff's supervisor", key word supervisor, is getting in trouble for supervising? Ya that makes sense. I do not see how Lt. Longbrake failed to respond to the call when he is the suporvisor and can send whoever is closest to the victim. If that 3 year deputy was right in Castelia, then good for Lt. Longbrake to think of sending the closest deputy. Second, how is the deputy with 3 years experiance going to get any more experiance if he doesnt go to a call? This artical clearly says that the victim of the rape was already home from the bar on 101. Does it really take 29 years of experiance to go talk to the victim? Eric a a great Lt. I do not see any reason at all why his family and him have to go through a 5 day unpaid suspension.

Come on!  This is NOT LE bashing or the BLAME of ALL LE officers.  This is about ONE person who FAILED to do his job.  Eric was an eager and a "can do" deputy when he first started.  A top officer.  For some reason, he and a few other ranking supervisors have morphed into apathetic and lethargic performers over decades.  Once again, such conduct must be defended by a labor UNION.  There is NO excuse in sending a less experienced deputy on a FELONY call of VIOLENCE.  Sitting in dispatch during this call for service is unexcusable.  So a few of you defend Longbrake under the auspices of "we need to support our LE officers" or "they work so hard everyday to protect us while you sleep" concept?  What about the RAPE victim?  Did she get the best for what taxpayers pay out?  Is the county getting their tax dollars worth for what they pay a lieutenant?  The premise for LE is to PROTECT and SERVE!  NOT serve yourself!  I am glad Sheriff Lyons is addressing the unacceptable performance of dilatory personnel.  There are several more working the road, jail and court house.  This deputy is making everyone in LE look bad, NOT the BLAME of anyone else.  There are other disciplinary issues in his 201 file.  I am sure Eric has applied to retire.  He has 29 years in and is hoping to make it to 30 years.  This is why he is filing a UNION grievance.  He needs to extend his time before the risk of termination begins.  What a way to end a life long career.

Some of you clowns here are unbelievable. I suppose everyone of you walked into your job with 20 years experience the first day.

Longbrake made sure the call was covered and responded to. Doing his job as supervisor sent another deputy to the call while he provided breaks for the dispatch center which are dictated by contract.

Now if this deputy of 3 years is unable to handle the job then maybe he should be gotten rid of also and another 20 year veteran hired to replace him.

But sooner or later you'll run out these older deputies and will have to "train" some greenhorns to replace them. But remember this experience comes with time and if they are not allowed to handle these calls they won't know what to do anyway.

@judicator, I'm sorry you're not out there risking your life every time a call for help comes in to the Law enforcement agency, which by the way, is determined by where one resides, not who they like the best, is it not?

to Law enforcement, thank you for all the jobs you do and not everyone thinks you're corrupt so ignore those who are just mouthing off. Bad manners are not a chargeable offense.

Hey John.....Do your job!!!   That is what we are paying you for and if you don`t want to do it, then you need to find another line of work!. Just because you have been a cop for 21 years and moved up in rank doesn`t entitle you to sit on your lazy fat a$$ and make others do your job.  The people are getting fed up with cops like you.  Good for the Sheriff for doing the right thing. Keep up the good work  Terry and Paul.  Make us proud fellas.
