MIDDLE BASS ISLAND

Mark Reighard couldn't find a place to sit.

With July 4 approaching, the popular winery buzzed with the holiday weekend excitement of 1,000 people.

Music bounced off the castle's walls and ricocheted across the island. A light breeze blew off the shoreline, easing the assault of the early summer sunshine.

Because of the heavy crowd, Reighard, 29, a successful businessman and Toledo native, stood beside a full table of friends, munching on pizza and sipping wine.

And then the floor disappeared.
