Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth provided the following answer pertaining to Denzel Castile:
Mr. Castile was transferred from the jail and admitted to the Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital, an Ohio Department of Mental Health in-patient facility in Toledo, on May 22, 2013, pursuant to an application for emergency admission to the hospital (commonly known as a "pink slip").
This action was taken after Mr. Castile's mental health condition was evaluated at the jail by a mental health professional/public health officer employed by Firelands Counseling and Recovery Services.
The evaluation resulted in a determination being made that his needs at that time would best be served by hospitalization.
The sheriff's office has placed a written hold order at the hospital for Mr. Castile. When we are notified that Mr. Castile is ready to be discharged from the hospital, we will pick him up and transport him back to the county jail for reincarceration pending further court action.
Denzel Castile, 19, is charged with killing
his 11-week-old cousin Athena
Castile about two weeks ago.
An Erie County judge set Denzel's bond
at $1 million related to his aggravated murder charge.
Witnesses at the scene told authorities Denzel stabbed Athena several times within his grandparents' Dewey Street home.
