The Mailbag: Why was a Canadian Coast Guard cutter in Vermilion?
Well, Doug, I called the U.S. Coast Guard station at Marblehead and officers there didn't know why the Canadian vessel was hanging around. So I went ahead and called the public affairs center for the U.S. Coast Guard's 9th District in Detroit and an officer there said the cutter likely came in for the War of 1812 memorial festivities that are happening today. There are events planned from Cleveland to Toledo, with dozens of government, international and historic vessels involved. That's the most likely explanation for what the Canadian cutter was doing on our side of the lake.
