"Because the worst of all worlds is when you pretend like you have an immigration policy, you make coming into the United States without our permission illegal, and then you actually don't enforce it." - Tom Tancredo

Arizona has passed an immigration bill that allowed police to check to make sure immigrants are legally in the country.

Police have to have reasonable suspicion the person is an illegal immigrant, and can only ask about the citizenship of a person during "lawful contact" with that person.

For example, an officer cannot stop a person simply for being a possible illegal immigrant; the person has to already have committed a crime.

As a whole the bill mirrors federal law in what is legal and illegal as far as immigration goes, it only makes being in the country illegal a state offense as well. In Arizona, a state with widespread illegal immigration, this bill is very popular, but a storm of debate is brewing throughout the country over this new law.

Those who are opposed to this bill mainly say that it will breed racial profiling. This is yet to be proven; the wording in the bill makes it clear the only time an officer can question citizenship is if there has been an offense already.

Most of the claims seem to be unfounded, and we will have to wait and see if there is any racial profiling that comes out of this bill.

In my opinion, this bill is necessary. Good for the state government for stepping up to the plate and tackling this tough issue. This needs to be the event that makes the federal government wake up and realize it cannot ignore this issue any longer.

There are an astronomical numberof illegal immigrants living in this country. God bless them for wanting to improve their lives and their conditions, but they need to do so by coming to this country legally and working to become full citizens of this nation.

The federal government needs to step up to the plate and either reform the immigration laws, or enforce the laws that are already in place to the fullest extent.

Do not take me as someone who wants all immigrants out of this country. That is the furthest from the truth.

Our nation is a nation of immigrants, and immigrants have driven this country now for centuries, but one cannot ignore the fact there is trouble that comes from coming to this country illegally. That is why it is illegal in the first place.

America needs to welcome with open arms those who are looking to better themselves. If we believe that we offer the best way of life, then we are obligated to offer that way of life to all, but on our own terms.

All the best to Arizona. I hope the bill works with great success, and proves to our federal government that controlling our borders is not as hard as it might think.

I’m pretty sure this law will be stuck down as unconstitutional. Any law that singles out a particular race, creed, or color is inherently unconstitutional. Wouldn’t it have been better to pass a law that allows for the state to better protect it’s borders? If I’m not mistaken, there are those that believe largely in state autonomy. Is not each state’s national guard under control of the governor in times of peace? And their job is to protect our national borders. Border states should simply use their national guard and state police to tighten their own border. That is if you can get the national guard back from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Please remember that these are fellow human beings. Do not reduce them to something less by labeling them as evil illegals here to destroy our country. Remember the Japanese internment camps in the US? It was easy to reduce these people to “sub-human” and turn a blind eye. How about the people that lived next to concentration camps? I’m sure they didn’t think the Germans were having a neighborhood BBQ with brats and beer.

Not one word about jailing the people that hire them. They pay them under the table, below minimum wage and no taxes. Like they really don't know they are illegal? Yeah right.

And the similarity of the people who want us to carry papers and be tattooed, teabaggers, Conservatives, are of German heritage. Much like like the Nazis in 1933 Germany. Think about that.

I think I agree with one point that Brutus has made ever! haha. The government needs to turn off the employers that attracts illegal immigrants in the first place. The government gives every immigrant a card that can be verified electronically, and make it mandatory to have that card to get a job, you take care of a big part of the problem.

Many illegal aliens actually do pay some taxes. The ones who get a job with fake identities do have payroll and other taxes withdrawn from their checks. It’s the guys that pay them under the table that are perpetrating the crime. Yes, they should be heavily fined to make up for the loss of tax revenue.

On the flip side, if we do stop all illegals, be prepared for the food producers to pass that cost on to us. I find it interesting that the right complains about “hidden taxes” in the healthcare debate that will be passed onto the consumer, but do not seem to realize that this cheap migrant labor keeps the cost of our food and goods low. If they can’t pay their workers $2 an hour to pick lettuce, and their labor rate has gone to $7 minimum wage, then how much will a McDonalds hamburger cost?

Another Obama Gaffe… Immigrant ID Law Has Been On Books For 70 Years
Posted by Jim Hoft on Sunday, May 2, 2010, 11:12 AM
The tenured law professor senior lecturer who claims to be a history buff sure messed this one up.

The lecturer in chief reacted hastily to the the new Arizona immigration law. Obama said it was “irresponsible” and threatened “the basic notion of fairness that we cherish as Americans.”

Obama went on to say this about the Arizona law:

“In fact I’ve instructed officials in my administration to closely monitor the situation and examine the civill rights and other implications of this legislation. If we continue to fail to act on a federal level we will continue to see misguided acts open up around the country… We can choose a different future. A future that keeps faith with our history, with our heritage and with the hope that America has always inspired the hearts of people all over the world.”

Unfortunately, the president was wrong again. The law has been in the books for 70 years and the new Arizona bill just reinforces this national immigration law.
Byron York reported:

Some people might not know that since the 1940s, federal law has required non-citizens who are in the United States permanently to carry on their person, at all times, the official documents proving that they are here legally — green card, work visa, etc. That has been the law for 70 years, and the new Arizona law does not change it.

Kansas Secretary of State candidate Kris Kobach mentioned this yesterday at the Winning Back America Conference in Independence, Missouri. Kobach, who has successfully defended Arizona immigration laws in the past, also noted that it was liberal hero FDR who first initiated these laws 70 years ago.

Maybe somebody should clue President Obama in on this before he starts shooting his mouth off again about this “irresponsible” bill.
