The Mailbag: Does anyone remember a talking dog on Kelleys Island?
Kelleys Island

Q: I'm wondering if any of your "older" readers remember the little English Bulldog on Kelleys Island that talked.  I think he was at the Casino.  The waitress that worked there had taught the dog to say different works and sentences.  — Dave from Massillon.

A: I wasn't sure I'd be able to find any information about this pretty obscure pooch. But, thanks to the power of the Internet, I stumbled across an old postcard of Tarzan the talking dog that's for sale on the arts and crafts website Etsy. You can see it here. Tarzan was a Boston Terrier, and it seems he did indeed hang out at the Casino. Considering it's January, things are pretty quiet around the island right now. But, anyone who remembers this communicative canine should feel welcome to comment below with their stories.

I was in my mid-forties before I realized Inscription Rock was just not an unlevel picnic shelter.........and there were glacial grooves there................Before that, I don't remember a whole lot about Kellys Island.

Same with PIB..........................Early fifties before I got past the RoundHouse or Frostys and went up in Perrys monument.

It was Sam, a black lab, that was owned by Parny McCune at McGoon's Saloon.  He was a fixture there for years.

My Father (Cooncat Sr.) would go ice fishing over there & there was a guy with a car that all it was was engine & chassis & seats. They would drive it out & fish from the car. Then they'd go to the Casino & TarZAN was there (that's how it was pronounced. Ask Big Chuck Shedowski (sp?) about the dog.

A senior citizen who passed told me about a dog that was trained to say "Eisenhower" on Kelly's.  I am not sure if this is the K-9 you are referring.  I have been on Kelly's a lot, but never witnessed any dog do this.

Do you remember the sign that was printed on a paper plate and hung on a beam in the Casino?

It read: "There are no fifty cent pieces on Kelleys Island, the (ethnics) in Marblehead married them all".

I remember seeing a pink elephant flying by once when I left the Casino. Then two more flew by after leaving the Pump on the same day.

I was a pup in the forties, but I remember a small dog.

He made a "noise" that was claimed to be "hamburger".

I suppose if you had enough to drink..........
