Racial favoritism at its finest. Where's my history month? Where's white history month? This my friends is why race will always be an issue.
Re: Where's white history month
When I went to school in the 50's we had 2 unique subjects 1 was simply called "world history" and we learned about the history of the world and we also had a course called "American History" and we learned about the history of America including all the American persons of significant stature. Race was not defined as we just studied Americans.
Get in the 21st century PLEASE! You learned about white people in your history class in the 50s! I'll be sure to wish you a Happy White History month in March and the other ten months!
February itself could very well just be called "History Month", broadly, and allow for whatever sub-sects of history people want to investigate be what interests them. So much goes on in this month from religious, secular, sports, U.S. past, U.S. recent histroy, etc. that for being a short month there really is a lot to it. It would settle a lot of what we in the younger generation call "butthurt" about the special designation (or lack of special designation) for one group or another. Often by younger millenials/gen-xers we call a person or group like that a "special snowflake" in reference to Fight Club.
Tyler Durden: Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else.
That said, I don't have a problem with the celebration of "black history". Or as California recently carved out for its students, gay history. Or whatever other division of "history" about which you want to raise awareness. People have many different interests and hobbies. But a group can't get offended if other people take no interest in a publicized awareness, cultural trend, nor if a subject is browbeaten into them.
As for your comment, deertracker, I'm frankly sick of hearing that crap yet again. The other eleven months are white history month?! No. No they aren't. They are whatever month someone makes of them. I think it would do more to advance "black history" to stop having it confined into such a limited time. It overlays U.S. and world history like all other histories and is a year-round "event". For the same reasons people stop being exceptionally cheery and lose interest in Christmasy things after Christmas so too do those "eleven months" have a relative perceived lack of caring/interest in this particular thread of history.
"We celebrated in February, isn't that enough?"
"Why are you forcing this issue? It's June, can't you wait a few more months to bring up this stuff?"
"We can't talk about cross-color stuff until February when it's more accepted."
"I got so much black history shoved at me that frankly I'm sick of it for another eleven months. Maybe I'll care again then but gimme a break for now please!"
How many people may have thoughts similar to that? Even remove black history and replace it with any other topic!
How much have the Native Americans put up with this whole time? While satiricial is there not a string of truth to this Onion video illustrating that "Economy Failing Because U.S. Built on Ancient Indian Burial Ground".
Thinkagain is sick of seeing all the homosexual issues brought up. Big Dog is sick of seeing all the Republican issues brought brought up. Contango is sick of seeing all the financial illiteracy issues brought up. Coasterfan is sick of seeing all the welfare hate issues brought up. Individually and in the groups we associate we are all tired of these special snowflakes constantly demanding our obedience and attention. In today's world where information is at our fingertips, you can get overloaded.
Information, causes, candidates, thoughts, and such must be marketed out. They must be explained and defined. They must groom the consumer to WANT to consume them intellectually because of all the other truths, facts, causes, and effects that intrinsically link it to everything else. Browbeating it into people only works for some and often makes more people MORE resentful to learning about what you want to teach them.
If you want another term some of us younger people use it's called "Westboroing" people after the notorious Baptist church in that town.
You know the ones. "God Hates Fags". Who show up every time something happens they don't like and protest it, shout, condemn, "educate", and spread misery, hate, and make all other rational people (even if they disagree with those same "fags" they protest) actually unite against them?
Issues like this get me riled up, so forgive my (as Pter calls) "blathering" but until THESE truths here above are put on the table, there will forever be a disconnect between people.
So to all, enjoy the rest of February however you take it because soon the aggregate of national attention will move and hold in just as high regard to Black History Month the sacred institutions of beer and college basketball. Satirical? Sad? True? Take it however you want.
All of you should also be aware that the younger generation IS watching. IS learning. IS paying attention. But on which side of the meme will you be when their culture comes into its own?
Agree with aeres. How about this BET (black entertainment television)? It will always be about race. If we came out with a WET it would raise hell with all these wannabe liberal groups. And I said "wannabe" because if they were truly into equality this $hit with blacks would have been over when they were freed. Why don't the Jewish people or Native American culture have things like this? Because they moved forward. It's in the past. Get over yourselves!
BET is white owned! WET is on the other channels. All except OWN and TV One! Why would Jewish people need
"things like this?"
...Because of their slavery and mass amounts of killings. I'm guessing you are someone that is all about the "what happened to OUR ancestors" type and don't know much about any other history. Shows that you are just as close minded as the next "African american" that pulls the race card any chance they get. Lol and every other channel has a mix of races on them. And BET is owned by someone who thinks they have to make up for ancestry acts just like you. I'm just saying as a white guy I don't feel like I owe anyone anything due to the past. Black America has just as many rights as white America. So all of that $hit needs done away with.
Yes the Jews were persecuted and killed but you can only kill a person once. African Americans were persecuted over and over and over and lots were killed too. As a Black guy I don't owe anyone anything related to the past either. You brought up slavery not me. Clowns like you want to make this about slavery but it really is about teaching blacks about their heritage. The BET owner is in it for the money like all business owners. WTH do you know about the rights of Black America? Nothing white boy!
Racist much black boy?
Deertracker your IGNORANCE is not worth my time. You are stereotyping yourself. Lmao
Bet has a mix of races. If you compare them to the cmt which had no one but whites.
And I'm talking about the TITLE of the channel more than anything.
Darius Rucker is on CMT. The reason other black people aren't on there is by their own choice.
All of *American White History Month* happened continuously until about 40 years ago when a small breakthrough was made. Such discussion continues to happen for more social studies/history lessons in more classrooms than you might believe or imagine. Trust me, my friend, you have not been shortchanged in any way, shape or form!
Racism will never end until there is equality, what do you say to the people under 40? Retribution never heals the past.
I tell them to pull their pants up, nobody wants to see half their butt hanging out. Then I tell them to put their hat on straight, sit up when your driving, stop mumbelling , turn the music down when you drive, and instead of having a pair of $300 tennis shoes while paying for your food with an ohio card _, go get a J-O-B !
You. Are. An. Idiot. Unless you're talking about people under 40 raised in Sandusky....then you're probably right. But the rest of America has a little more class than Sandusky does. I work, own my own home, have multiple vehicles, and a family that has never seen free food. Suck me.
Some guy calling themselves momma is calling someone idiot. You don't even live in Sandusky and I'm under 40 you idiot. The scary thing is your kids growing up to be racist idiots also and your husband / wife not doing anything about it. You should be checked for child abuse.
I live in PERKINS now, not raised here though. That's why I have stuff.
Well, you have no CLASS but you are an A$$! I grew up in Perkins. Big deal? NO!
I have stuff and was raised in sandusky. So you from Bellevue and you live in Perkins WOW. Miss Momma wants to be congratulatated because she mention she has things a lot.SO WHAT!
Am i missing something...How do we know BabyMomma is a guy?
Because of his penis
I am talking about people under 40 in Sandusky, and I am right, I'm not even talking about just black people.. So ease up there babymomma. I don't care if you work, have multiple homes, tons of vehicles, or ever seen free food.. So you can blow me. Don't have your jizzy all up in a tizzy
If you're worried about my Jizzy. Clean it off your old ladies upper lip.
Babymomma, thank you for proving a lot of peoples points ! Your above comment is about as stupid as it gets ! And you wonder why everyone makes fun of you and thinks your an a$$ . sometimes its better for you to keep your mouth shut and be considered a complete dik-head instead of opening your mouth and removing all doubt. And I'm sure your jizzy is on your sisters upper lip
You blast me for my comment and follow it up with the exact same thing I did? That is a hypocrite. That's ok, I've been called worse by better people.
Black history month is not about retribution, or celebrating a culture of $300 shoes and sexualized rap music. It is about a history of people that overcame a great injustice, and became inventors, politicians, businessman, scientists, and helped progress our society forward from a time of slavery..
By the way, I am white.
Thank you and very well said. BTW, I am Black!
Yea the Jews never overcame injustice. Where's their month? Where's Mexican history month? It's all a reason to promote racism, get over it, we've all suffered. You guys got your retributions when Obama got re-elected. Now the white man suffers while the black man succeeds
Wow... black history month does not promote racism. Where in any black history month literature do you see something that says, "We must get retribution for our ancestors time in slavery?" It isn't there.
As for "Now the white man suffers while the black man succeeds" I don't even know how to respond to that other than laughing.
That part was meant to be a joke. I thought that was obvious. You were supposed to laugh.
Your a joke. I thought that was obvious.
Thank you. Similar to deertracker I appreciate the way you said that.
(Here it comes, look out!)
I am not disagreeing with what you said in general or even what the focus of Black History Month is. In fact, if people want to study that particular branch of history then more power to them! Learning should incorporate many points of view and opinions based on multidisciplinary support. But even with what you said and I agreed to, it would be nice to recognize that there is no usurpation of importance or relevance to many other histories that compose who we are.
Your words were true because they are thematic, universal. See?
"[Irish] history month is not about retribution, or celebrating a culture of [liquor] and [zealous Catholicism]. It is about a history of people that overcame a great injustice, and became inventors, politicians, businessman, scientists, and helped progress our society forward from a time of [gang slayings and NINA]..
By the way, I am [not Irish]."
So your words are very much the essence of any recognition. Again I agree with them and think it foolish to purposely discard "black history" from your studies. But should any kind of recognition be favored over another, and if so, who decides and implements that? Is it causing more harm than good with the way it is presented?
This and my rather long post above I hope stir thought. That was my whole reason for throwing my own questions out there. Not to tear down the label of February or even diminish historic contributions by blacks, but as a plea that we take a step back and see how all the threads weave together into our tapestry and not risk wearing one thinner than others.
Black history month programs, such as this one, are great for uniting a community.
