and yet they still live there, knowing the floods and ice will come. nature wins every time.
I've never forgotten a geology professor who showed the class photos of the tremendous damage done in a Mississipp River flood. And THEN he said (loudly): "THEY CALL IT A FLOOD PLAIN FOR A REASON, PEOPLE!"
People who build/live in flood plains need to anticipate flooding. Duh. So while I'm in awe of the destructive power of the water and ice, it's really hard to feel bad for the homeowners (especially since you and I are going to pay for them to rebuild assuming they had flood insurance). That's like asking you all to feel bad for me if I go outside without a coat and then decide I'm cold!
