Perkins, I appreciate you letting my brother and I stay with you during the renovations. Bathing us and giving us nightly massages was much appreciated. Pass along my thanks to your wife for me. And thank you again for all of your fine camera work! The 8x10's & the DVD's you made were fantastic. Next time take off the leather mask and join in the fun!

Wonder how they paid for that new high school down south in Norwalk? Must be all those "rich people" that live in the "booming" Huron County economy! Stop whining about 22 dollars a month for your kids education...if that is truly going to break you, you should probably declare bankruptcy now and get it over with. Maybe skip Wendy's once a month and eat something less expensive at home.

You know..I'm just curious.. Didn't Honeywell come in and give the schools an audit about conserving energy??? Isn't that where the windmill idea first came about??? I also thought they got a bargain of a deal to install a new high efficient boiler system at the high school.. Or did that not happen and that was the beginning of the new school ploy??

I'm just wondering whatever transpired with that energy audit..

YES THEY DID GOD OF THUNDER. bRAND NEW BOILERS AND LINES. The holes in the walls that they talk about are the old holes from the pipes they did not fill per fire code.

Funny how when folks start questioning the need for increased property taxes for school funding when obvious mistakes have been made in this instance, the "guilt police" show up with "do it for the kids".

Brick and mortar don't create good education. Good teachers and books do.

I think Perkins has a real credibility problem. A large percent of the voters do not trust the school board or the superintendent. There has been too many past experiences when moving this or that tas to this and not coming clean on school issues has all tainted the leadership's ability to convince voters.

This most recent incident of school not being safe as per the Ohio School Facilities commission was just another item on the stack. It was not that they lied it was how it was presented. Maybe the SR was to blame for how they headlined it in the paper BUT the Perkins leadership did not do much to change that perspective if it was the case.

Perkins is not going to pass this levy by hook or crook with the voters. Given the township also asking for money you start combining these levies and that is a lot of money.

If they wish to pass the school levy its going to take lots of talking one on one with voters and lots of house visits/coffees etc. AND I might add that can not be by levy volunteers BUT is going to have to be by school board and superintendent presence. Its going to be lots of folks really ruffling your feathers and you staying calm and answering "HONESTLY" questions. A committment from this day forth to be open and honest with the voters and I think for that its a levy hotline manned by school board members and the superintendent. In otherwords you folks are going to have to get "one on one" with the voters to pass this levy.

sO TEL ME IF I AM WRONG, LikeI have said I had to work so could not come to the meeting. But I heard that Gunner only answered a few questions off of flash cards, he said he would answer others online posting it today, is this true? So to me he PICKED the quetions that make him look good to answer. If there is nuthing to hind, and your so sure you have to have a new school. why not have an open session.

I spent an hour and a half with Mr. Gunner explaining the moving of millage from outside to inside. I spent another hour and a half with Mr. Gunner explaining the new academy concept.

There are many logical arguments to both concepts. But, after the first meeting I had the feeling the school administration was trying to eliminate the taxpayers vote on the new school. This process is against my whole core beliefs.

People, never give up your right to vote. This is your last control of government. Yes, schools are an arm of government.

The second meeting was an overview of the new building. With the precedence set with private money being used to finance half of the athletic field shouldn't that concept be used for the other non-educational areas of the new building? The pool, gymnasium, music area , performing arts area, and stage are a few that come to mind. I'm sure if these areas were half funded with private funds it might not be as tough a pill to swallow for the taxpaying public. How about raising those funds and then come to the public with your new school proposal.

I have ask numerous members of the school administration to explain areas of both these situations. They tell me they are not sure and will get back to me. They do get back to me but I feel there is only one person who truly understands the information. It's tough to sell a game plan to the troops when your captains and lieutenants can't pass the information along.

donutshopguy - were your meetings with Gunner and the other members of the administration recent?

When the millage switch was first being discussed and when I noticed the sign at the football stadium that a new academy was "coming soon."

Thanks for your reply. I've gotten the impression that many of the pro-levy supporters wrongly have the idea that those of us who do not full throttle support the levy are not informed or educated about the issues. Some posters have said as much here by suggesting that (more or less) that if you got yourself informed and attended those meetings you'd see how these ideas are great. I've attended many meetings, asked questions, etc. and I remain unconvinced.

Under,

No one should view me as anti-education. I believe education is the best method of improving ones self in their lifetime. I believe parental involvement is the critical link.

I don't believe the process taken by the school board and administration was in the best interest of the community. Eliminating the public vote on this building project to me is un-American. Public vote on issues both local and state or federal level is critical to our country as a whole. Bureaucrats taking away public vote is a frightening slippery slope.

The community knows what is best for themselves. Not a school board and superintendent who want to control the purse strings at the exclusion of the taxpaying public.

So, what happens when the facilities are rated 92/100 (a very poor rating-one of the worst in the state), and the local taxpayers still will not support a facility levy or bond issue? Keep in mind that three different assessments have been done by at least two different entities, neither which is in a position to benefit from new construction (regardless of what others say on here). If the need is critical, is it not incumbent on the board (elected to represent the people) and the superintendent to make a decision to proceed in the interest of near term and long term students and residents?

As for the use of private funds to support portions of the building, I don't have a problem with that. But, how many negative comments were made about the naming of the stadium areas? Quite a few; so should the board proceed with private naming rights even if it's against the wishes of many local residents?

Do we support each other's services in the community, or do we only vote for our own interests? For example, why should I support EHOVE, the senior citizen levy, the Health Dept. levy, etc. I don't use those services nor will my children. I vote for them because I recognize that for a well-rounded community, there are services and organizations that need support in order to help improve the lot of other citizens.

9299,

You are worried about the wishes of many local residents in naming rights but have no problem taking away their rights to vote on a new school. You speak out of both sides of your mouth when it's to your benefit.

Spoken like a true bureaucrat. You know what is best for the community. We don't need the public's input or vote. Just pay the taxes I deem necessary.

9299 - You asked:

"So, what happens when the facilities are rated 92/100 (a very poor rating-one of the worst in the state), and the local taxpayers still will not support a facility levy or bond issue?"

I see the biggest problem with the school district as lack of genuine, trustworthy leadership. The BOE and the Superintendent seem to want to frame it as the community doesn't care about its children. This community has changed, but they aren't going to win any more yes votes by beating a drum and chanting "Perkins doesn't care about its children."

9299,

So when the state and federal governments decide to increase your tax rates to 90% your OK with that? Remember they were elected and it's incumbent of them to work for your best interest. Spoken like a true bureaucrat.
