A red-hot hitting performance Tuesday afternoon lifted the Sandusky Post 83 baseball team into at least a top-three finish at the 12-team American Legion state tournament in Lancaster.
Post 83 improved to 34-7 after slamming Piqua 26-10 in a day game and Circleville 18-1 at night, each in seven innings.
With the win, Post 83 takes on Napoleon at 2 p.m. today in the winner's bracket semifinal between the last two unbeaten teams of the tournament.
In three games over the past two days Post 83 has outscored its opponents 62-18 in 23 innings, an average score of 21-6. Meanwhile, the Napoleon offense has been impressive in its own right, outscoring its three opponents 50-19.
"We're happy to secure a finish in the top-three at the worst," Post 83 associate coach Mike Shepherd said. "We're playing a very good Napoleon team, and we'll be in the underdog role.
"But we are playing with a lot of confidence and we'll try to find a way to get it done."
After using the team's top two starters in the win over Piqua, Shepherd got a big lift from Logan Shullick (Norwalk) in the win over Circleville.
Aside from his two-run home run in the first inning, Shullick pitched five innings and allowed one run on three hits, striking out three and walking three.
