Funcoast • May 13, 2015 at 8:44 AM

It's the only sport where a strike is a good thing. Yep, that's right — we're talking about bowling. It's an often forgotten pastime, and one of the easiest ways to make Friday nights fun again. Read on to learn more about reader faves — and to find out which local alleys have Glow Bowling, laser tag and hermit crab racing.

1.)    What do you think made you a finalist in the Readers’ Choice Awards?

Our support for the locals.

2.)    What’s one unique thing about your business (a specific menu item, a special service) that people would be surprised to know you offer?

I think being a family owned business forever, as well as the attention that we give to customers.

3.)    What’s your favorite thing about the Northcoast Ohio area?

Probably being by Cedar Point and the water.

4.)    Besides your own business, what’s your favorite thing to do/place to go in the area?

I’m a big golfer. I go to Sawmill Creek a lot. But other than that, I’m just working hard.

5.)    Do you have anything in particular you’d like to tell the Funcoast.com readers?

Stop in and have some family fun entertainment. We offer a rewards card program to give an incentive to customers, just as a thank you. On Friday and Saturday night from 11 p.m. until 2 a.m., we do our Glow Bowling, which is always fun. We have Glow Bowling, a pizza buffet and shoes all for $13.

SECOND PLACE: Cedar Lanes

Where: 1935 Cleveland Rd., Sandusky

Hours: 5-10 p.m. Mon.-Thurs., 5 p.m.-12 a.m. Fri., 12 p.m.-1 a.m. Sat., 12-10 p.m. Sun.

1.)    What do you think made you a finalist in the Readers’ Choice Awards?

Just because we have so much to offer with the bowling center and we have an upscale water facility. What sets us aside from other bowling centers is that we have not only bowling but we have laser tag and the water park. It’s just a great entertainment complex.

2.)    What’s one unique thing about your business (a specific menu item, a special service) that people would be surprised to know you offer?

We have a high quality restaurant with full service food delivered right to your lane by the staff.

3.)    What’s your favorite thing about the Northcoast Ohio area?

The ability to do something in any part of town. No matter where you go there’s always something else to do.

4.)    Besides your own business, what’s your favorite thing to do/place to go in the area?

I like to go to the waterfront and the downtown area.

5.)    Do you have anything in particular you’d like to tell the Funcoast.com readers?

If they haven’t been out here to see everything we’ve done over the last couple of years, they will be amazed at what the complex has to offer.

THIRD PLACE: Riverview Lanes

Where: 125 N. Main St., Huron

Hours: Sept.-Apr.: 4 p.m.-12 a.m. Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-2 a.m. Sat., 12-11 p.m. Sun. May-Aug.: 4-12 p.m. Tue.-Fri., 12 p.m.-12 a.m. Sat., closed Sun.-Mon.

Info: 419-433-4258 or riverviewlanes.com

Owners: Gary H. & Donna Gilbert

1.)    What do you think made you a finalist in the Readers’ Choice Awards?

I’d say customer satisfaction. Some of the entertainment we do here, and we do all you can bowl for three hours for $11, kids are $8. I would say the value you get for your dollar is one of the main reasons. Plus we’re a family-oriented business. We have a lot of birthday parties, scouts and church groups.

2.)    What’s one unique thing about your business (a specific menu item, a special service) that people would be surprised to know you offer?

We offer calamari here. That’s an unusual item for a bowling center. We have a very broad menu for a bowling center, I’ll tell you that.

3.)    What’s your favorite thing about the Northcoast Ohio area?

The seasons. It gives us a chance to not only to cater to the locals, then we have an opportunity with tourism and the islands to meet a lot of new people in the summer. The seasons add a multifaceted aspect to my bowling business so that other than the month of May, we’re pretty steady year round. There’s a lot of fun stuff as far as I’m concerned.

4.)    Besides your own business, what’s your favorite thing to do/place to go in the area?

I golf on Monday nights at Sawmill Creek. We have a Riverview Lanes Golf League and we have 24 guys that play, so I look forward to golfing on Monday nights with my friends.

5.)    Do you have anything in particular you’d like to tell the Funcoast.com readers?

I have 2 things. Last one to bar buys, and it’s a great place to eat and drink because you can bowl here.

FOURTH PLACE: Plaza Lanes

Where: 2641 E. State St., Fremont

Hours: 9:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Mon., 3-11 p.m. Tues., 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wed., 3-11 p.m. Thurs., 1 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Fri., 10:30 a.m.-1:30 a.m. Sat., 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sun.

Info: 419-332-1192 or theplazalanes.com

Owners: Roger & Joan Rhoad

1.)    What do you think made you a finalist in the Readers’ Choice Awards?

Well we have a brand new facility, and we have not only bowling, but we also have a 9 hole black lit mini golf course and an arcade and prize redemption center.

2.)    What’s one unique thing about your business (a specific menu item, a special service) that people would be surprised to know you offer?

Hermit crab racing is one thing, and we have Cameo Pizza. The hermit crab races are every Sunday at 6 p.m. We have 40 crabs and they’re all painted very pretty, you can even name your own crab. We also have live entertainment every Saturday.

3.)    What’s your favorite thing about the Northcoast Ohio area?

Put-in-Bay. We also have a Cameo Pizza over there, and I think that the lake and islands are beautiful.

4.)    Besides your own business, what’s your favorite thing to do/place to go in the area?

Our favorite thing to do would be boating and visiting the islands. We go to Pelee Island, we go to Kelleys, Middle Bass and we live on South Bass in the summer.

5.)    Do you have anything in particular you’d like to tell the Funcoast.com readers?

If you have never been to Plaza Lanes, I think you will be really surprised at what we have. People walk in here and say, “Oh my gosh, I didn’t know we had something like this in the area.”
