COLLINS — Western Reserve combined a strong defensive effort with just enough offense in Friday’s 45-43 Firelands Conference boys’ basketball win over Crestview.
The Roughriders outscored the visitors 8-4 in the final period to score a come from behind win.
Western trailed 16-15 at the first break and found themselves on the short end of a 29-25 halftime score.
The hosts used a 12-10 advantage in the third stanza to trim the Cougar lead to 39-37 heading into the final frame.
The Roughriders were down by two points with two minutes remaining in the contest, but a big three-pointer from Nate Schmidt put Western up by one.
Then, the defense came up with a big stop as the Riders held on down the stretch.
“Most people watching the game tonight would probably say that we couldn’t have shot it into the ocean,” said Western Reserve coach Chris Sheldon of his team’s 17-of-53 shooting from the field. “But this was a great win for us. We kept our chins up when we could have folded, and kept battling. And in the end we were able to battle enough to get a win.
“This was a big step for us in overcoming adversity and hanging in there to get a win,” the coach added. “Nate Schmidt was having a hard time hitting shots all night, and he knocks down that big three to put us on top.”
Schmidt led Western with 11 points, Darren Johnson scored 10 and Jake Fannin eight.
Jake Hill tallied 11 points and Tyler George 10 to pace Crestview.
With the win, the Roughriders improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the FC.
Western entertains Keystone in non-league action tonight.
Crestview (0-2, 0-1) hosts South Central Friday in FC play.
