We recommend Bill Monaghan for Erie County Commissioner. Our township, Groton, had severe flooding in the spring of 2008. We have been working with county agencies and the commissioners to find permanent solutions that will benefit our residents.

A recent letter writer says millions of vets have been treated at "virtually no cost at all to the vet, paid for by our tax dollars." Most Americans have no problem having our tax dollars pay for veterans health care. But, it should stop there. We do not want our tax dollars to pay for everyone who has the mistaken notion that the government owes them this.

The annual brutal slaughter of baby seals in Canada is on its way. It's the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Last year more than 72,000 baby seals as young as 12 days old were clubbed and shot to death and some skinned alive. The Canadian government condones this massive killing of Harp seals.

The state's residency laws when it comes to sex offenders were outdated before the ink was dry on the legislation. Convicted sex offenders are prohibited from living within 1,000 feet of a school, a daycare center and other public places for fear they may re-offend and victimize a child.

The U.S. Postal Service prides itself on delivering through rain, hail, sleet or snow, but perhaps not any more on Saturday. While the proposal to eliminate residential and business deliveries on Saturday is clearly to help the federal agency to save money by eliminating up to 40,000 jobs, the pros and cons of such a move are not as readily apparent.

The flow of combined sanitary sewage waste and surface water (street and ground) has been entering our bay for many years. It occurs when the sewage treatment plant cannot process the sudden increase in volume. The combined sewer and street waters enters the bay, untreated, through about 15 combined sewer overflows. These releases are frequent during the rainy season.

I was reading on one of the bookmarks at the Bellevue Library about the facts about tobacco. I was shocked to find out cigarettes contain ammonia and arsenic. How is it possible that they can sell to the public something that contains ammonia and arsenic? Doesn't that constitute endangering the public?

And the students and staff of Sandusky High School's music program did it again!. We saw these accomplished young people perform Fiddler on the Roof. Under the direction of Ron Albert, these Sandusky students were once again able to present a charming mix of acting and musical talent that has withstood the test of decades.

I don't think I can hold a recent letter writer too responsible, especially if he listens to the mainstream media and the leaders of the Democrats. They both have certainly implied, if not specifically stated, that all the violence and threats have come from Republicans.

As someone with a pre-existing condition, I have found that health care has sky-rocketed to the point that my monthly premium is bigger than my mortgage payment. I greatly feared my ability to get health care in the months and years to come.

On Jan. 23, I was informed Mercy Willard Hospital no longer wanted my services. For four years, the emergency staff at Mercy has been a stable, energetic, altruistic, well-trained group of nurses and doctors. I have been a team leader and educator for the nurses, and a good friend. The emergency care at Mercy has been outstanding.

Thumbs UP to Jamie Steinemann for taking care of the business end of the baton at Firelands Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Carl Topilow keeps the music in tune, but Steinemann directs behind the scenes, making sure the money comes in and the publicity goes out -- and Sandusky and environs gets to keep a first-rate bit of art and culture.
