Vermilion pays out in money-skimming scandal

The former safety service director will receive a payment of about $2,000 after council unanimously voted in favor of the idea Monday during a meeting, according to councilman Scott Sherwood.
Daniel Squires submitted a mileage log late in July to city officials, requesting reimbursement of money he spent using his personal vehicle for city business.
When Squires left office, the current administration disputed payments Squires received for a $250 monthly travel allowance in addition to unused personal time.
Two other employees were also asked to return payments made during their departure from office in December 2009.
The city’s law director determined Ohio law differed from the method the prior administration used to calculate the payments for unused personal time, according to documents filed in Vermilion Municipal Court.
Squires’ travel allowance was disputed because he didn’t provide a log of the miles he traveled in his personal vehicle for city, documents stated.
During court proceedings, Squires paid the city approximately $5,000 for the travel allowance and unused personal time payment.
Squires’ mileage log, covering April 2008 to December 2009 detailed regular trips totaling 4,589 miles, according to documents provided Monday from city hall.
Another employee who was asked to return a payment for unused personal time has also paid the money back, but the third employee’s case remains pending in Vermilion Municipal Court.
Michelle Bowens, the former finance director, is being sued for about $9,000 in unused personal time as well as a duplicate salary payment she allegedly received.
Bowens is scheduled for a hearing next month as proceedings continue.
Squires has repeatedly refused to publicly comment on the matter. He didn’t attend the council meeting Monday, Sherwood said.

It sounds to me like there's an accountability factor involved here, someone should be responsible for the money that is spent no matter what the circumstances. And once again shows the incompetence of our elected officials that we have put in office. The only way we're going to rectify this, we must start elected people in our public offices that are competent and have integrity.
