State study can't uncover carcinogens in Sandusky County

2010
Researchers have hit another dead end in the search for answers on the childhood cancer cluster in eastern Sandusky County.
A radiation study released by the Ohio Department of Health this week identified no radioactive material or radiation fields that would have impacted community health in Clyde and nearby neighborhoods.
Of six scenarios researchers examined, not a single one contained red flags that might have pointed to a potential cause of the cancer cluster, which includes 28 children in eastern Sandusky County.
The absence of significant radiation is good news for the area, though it’s little comfort to worried families who still have no idea what triggered the childhood cancer outbreak.
Ohio Department of Health officials said the number of cancer cases points to some kind of environmental trigger. The elusive carcinogen may have only been in the air or water for a short time, so it’s possible that it’s no longer detectable.
What they studied
State health researchers examined six areas in the radioactive study in eastern Sandusky County:
1. Company releases or improper disposal of radioactive material
2. Radiation or radioactive material in homes of cancer cluster families
3. Airborne radioactive material
4. Radiation or radioactive material in schools
5. Radioactive releases from Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station
6. Radioactive material in streams or waterways

Does a cancer cluster exist in Castalia? Because it is situated in western Erie County(close to the eastern Sandusky County area) it makes me wonder????

I am also puzzled by what variables would be specific to those facilities. I can only think of radon naturally existing at these sites or a nuclear med mishap? Plastics, etc. abound in all heathcare institutions so it's really up to science to decipher the differences. Hopefully , it's not hopeless as we all desire to find an answer.

I'm racking my brains out trying to think of a possible common denominator that could link these cases together. Now that I am reading that exposure time to a carcinogen could be very brief and create ill effects,I am really stymied. Could this tragic association be related to where(what literal building or room) the children were born? Maybe we should check this kind of variable and perhaps take things further with a study of employee health/rate of cancers concerning those workers in the given time period. Could be very tough, though as buildings change or no longer exist.

Hilltop makes a good point to interview the parents and grandparents to determine what possible chemical exposure existed that could be carried genetically? Looking at the map seems to be a small concentrated area. I lack faith when the government conducts a study. I could suggest something to a government official only to be ignored. I would suggest all parents of the affected children to get together and share some thoughts among themselves. Perhaps start up a Yahoo Group? Did any of these children have the same medical doctor? Did any of these children take the same medicine? Did the mothers take the same or similar medicine while they were pregnant with the affected children? I am in no way trying to offend the parents. I am only trying to offer possible answers.

my daughter has been fighting liver cancer for over a year now, after living in sandusky county for 3 years.
should I tell her to suck it up it is just God's way of thinning out the herd? Or perhaps that it is just part of life for her?
How about to refuse any donations from the cancer research money, because those experimental drugs we drive 5 hours for each week have been working and kept her alive for months longer than expected without any treatment
I pray noseyrosey never has to live this kind of life because those callous, non human comments just make me wonder what kind of person they are, from the sounds of it, they are a huge idiot who should not open their mouth when they obviously do not live with cancer and do NOT know what it is like to watch your child fight for her life everyday and would do anything to trade places with her,
so how about trading places with her noseyrosey, because then I am SURE you would change your attitude real quick, oh yes and any money that was raised for her paid some of the close to 2 million in medical bills and travel expenses to drive 5 hours one way every week
people like you make me sick and question the good in all people

Not everyone with cancer is someone who would blow money donated to them. When it is a child's life in question that is the most tragic thing someone can go through -- in my opinion. Why should ANY parent just be quiet and believe that it's just "life" that is causing them to watch their son or daughter suffer for days, weeks, months, even years! If it was normal for that many young people to be diagnosed with cancer in one small area there wouldn't even be investigations right now. But there are! It's NOT normal at all for that many young people to be suffering, going through chemo and radiation and praying each and everyday isn't their last.

It's not necessary to volunteer to be thinned. If it's my time, it's my time. That's how it works. Cancer is nothing other than a disease that is a big money maker for doctors and pharmaceutical companies. There will never be a "cure" until the money runs out. Don't doubt for a moment that someone isn't making big money off these investigations. But people foolishly give money to cancer groups and to the families of those with the disease. If you saw some of the things that one of these families is spending their donations on it would make you question why anyone would support them.

There are a couple of plastics companies on the southeast part of town. One is a recycling plant. But also there is the Whirlpool plant with the paint. Like Factitious said though, these emmissions can go into the air and wouldn't be detectable a year later.

Right-wingnut "TaxpayJerK" rants against all things progressive including regulations prohibiting polllution that's killing us and pimps for republicans who gut U.S. and Ohio EPA's and let polluters pollute. You can't be anti-government AND anti-pollution. YOU would just move away because you don't care about the people who can't, you just care about yourself.

Seriously, can we just give up on this witch hunt. People are diagnosed with cancer every day. People die of cancer every day. It's natures way of thinning the herd. There is no big conspiracy here. It's sad when its a child who dies but its just a part of life. There is no answer so quit dwelling on it and live your life, whatever you may have left. If there was really some big toxic sinkhole, there would be scores of people dieing at the same time, not just a handfull.

This is either total incompetence on behalf of government or they do NOT want to give out the answer that will cause BILLIONS in loss of value in property and taxes. The ONLY option I would have is to simply move my family out and take the loss. Those that cannot afford to move out are in deep trouble. When it comes to my family, they come first. It will not matter anymore about property "values" and I would take a total loss on my property and home just to keep them safe from the "unknown" carcinogines. There is NO doubt something is wrong. Just take a look at the faces of those 28 innocent children, that is PROOF enough for me. I do NOT need a multi-million dollar study that shows nothing to prove or convince me something is seriously wrong. I have my own speculations from driving on the turnpike and smelling "carcinogines" going past Vickery. Good luck to all those in Sandusky County. It is your DECISION.

Why does the fact that we drill down in the ground passed the water table and dump toxics in the ground for yeeeeeeears NOBODY wants to even suggest that its leaking into the underground srings that feed areas like clyde bellevue???

This is the same phenomenon that killed-off Bald Eagles in the 60's (see Rachael Carson's Silent Spring.)
The reluctance by the State Health Department and the EPA to address such issues only allows them to call the event in Clyde as "just a coincidence."

Most don't really want to know, unless it is your child who is sick. The Koch brothers and their republican tea party want, and will get, less regulation in their fight/funding for libertarian-friendly legislation. What they can not change, they will defund.Think about some issues that we currently face: cancer cited in the article, coal tar, Lake Erie degredation from Asian carp and toxic algae. Environmentalism is a bad word until you can't touch the water.

Yes but they only looked for stuff they can find. Some plastics manufacturing (particularly acetyls) can intermittently spew a lot of formadehyde into the air but it doesn't stick around long. If it stays in the plant, the workers get sick. If it's vented and there's enough of it, the neighbors get sick. Maybe some day we'll learn how much it takes to make the neighbors sick. If we want to.
