A crew from SpillTek worked Tuesday at the Castalia duck pond to clear remnants of 100 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled into the pond over the weekend.

Crews from Vermilion-based SpillTek Environmental Services continued their efforts Tuesday to clean up the Castalia duck pond, which had been contaminated this past weekend by 100 gallons of diesel fuel.

SpillTek supervisor Ken Sanders has said it would be few days before absorbent equipment could sop up all of the fuel.

A firefighter discovered Monday that the pond had been contaminated by a semi-truck's leaky gas tank. The truck had been parked half a mile away, but its fuel leaked into a storm drain that led to the pond.

There were no reports that ducks or other wildlife were in immediate danger as a result of the spill, although crews are still assessing the extent of the damage.

Feeding waterfowl prohibited?

Use to take my kids down their, when they were young, to feed the ducks and play in the kids park down the road.

Kids park is gone. Ducks can't be fed.

At least I know why people are moving out of Castalia.

Grab up a few of those cormerants and swish them around in the water. They could soak it up pretty good and become worth something then.
