tell them to come on and collect it themselves, give them the police non-emergency phone number and tell them what it is  OR blow a whistle into the phone....that worked for me

Seen it All

Blow a whistle into phone!!  I LOVE IT.. thanks wiredmama, will definitely use that one on the next annoying sales call that won't take "I'm not interested" for an answer!!

I have never called the cops for a PRANK call! I hang up. I let the kids answer the phone.  With the new caller ID on everything, I do not answer the phone for strange numbers.  I never knew there were so many things I should be calling the police for.  Prank calls, fight with my teenager, dancing crazy people at the gas station, etc, etc. I understand there are some things that the POLICE are needed for, but some of this is just plain NONSENSE and a waste of time.  People need to grow up, and learn to take care of things for themselves.

Agreed on calling the non-emergancy line for a thing such as this.  But these calls are far from being mere pranks.  The callers can get downright mean and threatening if they think they can.  They prey on the elderly (including my parents) and those that are not wise enough to know better.  The amounts of money that they have scammed people out of is staggering to say the least!  Personally, I would document the calls, report them to the police as well as the phone company.  From what I understand the phone company can go after them depending on the scammers demands, how often they call you, etc.

When someone I don't know calls me, I just say "could you hold for a minute" then lay down the phone and walk away, continuing what I was doing. I then go back later and hang the phone up.
