You know that really big lake that sits next to us? I'm busy learning all about it.

I'm in a group of 14 journalists from the U.S. and Canada who have been accepted into a journalism fellowship, the Great Waters Institute, run by the Institutes for Journalism and Natural Resources.

The fellowship will let us study environmental issues affecting Lake Erie. I'll be away for a few days, studying global warming, fish management, ballast water, the Great Lakes compact and other issues, and posting about some of what I've learned in this blog.

Author Peter Annin, author of "The Great Lakes Water Wars," is one of the people leading the expedition.

I read his book after being accepted, and here are some of the things I learned: The five Great Lakes hold enough water to cover the lower 48 states with 9.5 feet of water. The Great Lakes hold one-fifth of all of the fresh surface water on Earth.

More public access would be nice. The wealthy dilletants should go out on thier yachts and leave the rest of us alone.
