BLOG: Guerra wants your weight-loss advice

2010
These past couple weeks have been very difficult for me. Seeing in the paper that Gary Mortus is ahead of me weight-loss wise by 6 pounds gets me very discouraged.
I continue week after week to try and change my habits when it comes to eating and nothing seems to be working. It's like the scale doesn't want me to be in the 100s. I'm just very frustrated with the whole situation. It seems like I have no hope in evening getting close to winning this competition.
I did get to work out with my trainer, Kevin Gallagher of Anytime Fitness, a couple times this past week. The workouts were actually fun and exciting. I really did enjoy them. One workout we really changed up and was something totally different for me and I really liked that. Sometimes just going to the gym and doing the same thing over and over again gets kind of boring and you lose interest. So it was nice for the change.
Now, I just wish I could see the change on the scale. Here we are in October with 13 days to go and I still have not lost anything. Gets to be frustrating right??
So here's what I'm thinking. How about you, the readers of my blog, tell me about your weight-loss success and disappointments. Tell me what has worked for you in your weight-loss journey and what hasn't. Maybe that's what I need. An outsiders view on the whole "weight loss" theory.

You're doing great! I, too, plateaued right as I was getting into the 100s. Super frustrating. A couple of things that keep me going:
I like to reward myself when I've had a good week or hit a milestone. It doesn't have to be a week where I lost a ton of weight, but if I worked out every day or ran really far, I'll treat myself. The key is, the treat CANNOT be food related. So I usually go to a movie or buy myself a book or a DVD.
I plateaued because I think my body got used to my diet and my workouts, so I changed both. Went full vegan instead of part time vegan, and went for more time on the treadmill vs. distance. So maybe changing something up a bit will help, both mentally and physically.
One of the tricks I used when I was trying to lose weight in high school was clipping magazine pictures of clothes I wanted to wear. I kept one on the fridge and one in my wallet, and it would keep me from making bad food choices. Just thinking that I would be putting off that goal. And I'm not saying choose a stick-figure model, just an outfit that you would love to pull out of your closet and slip on and feel good in.
Absolutely no pop. It's a killer for me, but tons of water is going to get you a lot farther than one caffeinated beverage.
One of my mantras, especially when I reallllly don't want to work out, is to tell myself that anything is better than what I was doing before. Even if I only run for 30 minutes, that's 30 minutes more than I was doing a year ago today.
I have a lot of these... but at any rate, you're not alone and you're doing great.

My best to you. Check on Dr Rozen or Dr Oz......they have plenty of valid stuff 4U.
Me...I drink about 1gallon of quality water a day, + food from my garden (without sour cream, or butter).
Do you a friend who would walk or exercise with you? That'll give you a bit of a boost.

Changing up your workout like you are doing is a good thing. Also, you could try doing workouts you are familiar with, but change the pace of the workout (speed it up) or the length...if it's weight training, drop the weights lower and go for more reps instead of worrying about increasing your max at the heaviest weight you can handle.
Take advantage of the fall weather and incorporate more outside activity in place of a gym workout.
With Diet:
Try to have one completely vegetarian meal a week (or a day if you like it). I'm not suggesting to go vegan or anything extreme, just maybe have a large salad with lots of mushrooms or a sliced up hard boiled egg for protein. (Just don't go nuts with the dressing). Yogurt is an easy side dish to add to a salad meal.
The worst health ideas I experimented with:
1) Living on a too-restrictive diet
2) Maintaining an unchanging exercise routine
3) Never, ever go below 1200 calories in a day
4) Any diet or fitness idea billed as a short-term solution that will allow you to maintain an unhealthy diet or sedentary lifestyle afterwards
5) Buying fat-burning pills

Don't think of it in terms of trying to win some silly competition. Think of it in terms of getting healthier. In that case you ARE a winner.
