Governments are wasting too much of our tax dollars

The city and the county wastes so much of our tax dollars that the taxpayers are constantly sitting on the sidelines feeling completely helpless over wasted money. Both the city and the county gave out raises knowing full well that both budgets were coming up short. The entities over spent and the taxpayers are asked to make up the difference in a sales tax hike and a campaign to increase taxes, or an increase in property taxes by way of a levy.

It seems when the county nursing home voted for a union, the nursing home started to suffer financially. The county cannot keep withdrawing money from the general fund to support the nursing home’s overruns. Since the union contract is up for renewal, now is the time to get out from under and close down the operation to prevent any further loss. There are plenty of empty nursing home beds in the county that the county can start calling around to find rooms for its clients.

The union stands strong and it will always have the upper hand over the county by threatening to strike if it doesn’t get its way with the county. The union needs to realize that the county no longer has the money it once had to accomplish what needs to be done. The county raised the sales tax and it still can’t meet its obligations. Government keeps demanding more revenue while wasting existing tax dollars.

It is ridiculous to pay a bonus to employees for showing up for work and on time. If an employee doesn’t want to show up for work, the employee should be fired by the employer for a no show. Too many people are out looking for jobs to tolerate employees not showing up for work.

Ten years of red ink is long enough to try and work with the nursing home to make it profitable. Losing $300,000 to $500,000 every year is simply outrageous and unacceptable. If the nursing home has not made a go of it by now, it never will and it will continue to lose money until the day it shuts down. The lost money could be better spent on other departments within the county that are in need of the money. Taxpayers deserve better accountability and for the entities to use some common sense to know when enough is enough.

Funny how there are many competing entities in the nursing home industry that are doing just fine, but the county consistently loses money in a for-profit industry.

Good job County!

130 bed facility with the cheapest room $190/day. This facility has the potential of $9,000,000 revenue a year. Sell it already.

Sharon, just because the county claims it's losing money on the nursing home doesn't mean it really is.

In 2012, revenues were $6,000,490 and expenses were $6,393,335 for an annual loss of $392,845.

They lost $859,473 in 2011.

If they are really losing that much money, why would they insist on keeping it? Also, wasn't it just a few years ago that the county put the blame on Medicaid because they were losing money --- something about Medicaid not paying for certain things anymore? I say good for Medicaid but not because of the poor people that the federal government program of Medicaid was established for. The government just made it harder for attorneys & other d-bags out there to criminally defraud the elderly while defrauding Medicaid on their behalf.

"If they are really losing that much money, why would they insist on keeping it?"

In case you haven't noticed, government is generally fond of losing money because they can force taxpayers to cover the losses.

In my jobs which were/are always non union, it was, "No workee, no payee". Ditch the home.

I find it somewhat comical that wherever there is a union there will be someone blaming the union for any problem(s) at that workplace. If you have ever been involved with union negotiations you should know that collective bargaining is fair for both sides. When an impasse occurs there are process' that are gone through that are fair for both sides such as a third party arbitrator. It is so easy for some people to just automatically blame the union.

Stop It

It's REAL easy when they make it that way. Bonuses for just showing up when you are supposed to? Who runs a business like that and expects to pull a profit?

Unions suck!

Cities and towns should not be in the business of running any healthcare facility/nursing home.

Sell it, make some money and privatize it. Get rid of the burden to the city.

Medicaid pays according to the way things are laid out in the plans of care. It isn't rocket science. Everything has to match. if that home isn't making money or breaking even, it is because management isn't following simple rules and they should know that. Whoever is running the show simply isn't making the match up of POC, LOC and nursing care for the inspections when they come in. Without it, they won't get paid. Someone needs to check on it. When that all matches, medicaid pays. Without it they don't pay. Simple as that.

If we didn't have unions. be like china. Go back in time around 1900,you see why unions started up. Had too buy from the co. store and pay rent because you had to live in there building. If you didn't do what co. said fine you later dead. Check out the facts and be surprise. henry ford was one who didn't want pay employees nothing.
