More drama at City Hall

Feb 4, 2014

Sandusky has more drama going on than any other city around us. The city needs to stabilize to the point that it can accomplish something other than putting out fires. Our budget is in crisis mode creating a whole new set of problems that need to be resolved. The upcoming changes are causing more chaos keeping the city from moving ahead.
It seems the commissioners’ agendas might prove to be too aggressive for the money and staff that the city requires to accomplish its set goals. Will the commissioners push staff to the point of resigning their positions due to the pressure of having over twenty projects on the drawing board? One commissioner wanted to hire an assistant to the engineer to keep up with it all without considering the sacrifices staff has given up to cut expenses. Instead of asking for an assistant to the engineer, how about trying to reduce the projects instead of piling on more projects? Any new projects should be frozen until the work load becomes more manageable for staff.
Three town hall meetings are planned back to back within a month’s time frame. Do the commissioners plan on taking their aggressive agenda on the road to sell us on a tax increase? In the past, we couldn’t even get the commissioners to meet with us for coffee once a month let alone meet with us three times in one month! Are the commissioners pushing things along to meet the deadline for issues to be placed on the May primary ballot?
One thing we do know is that the present budget will not support moving City Hall, or any kind of development without a tax increase. It is not in the best interest of the taxpayers to increase taxes so more borrowing and spending can continue, especially, when it involves going into more debt in order to move City Hall. The city should be looking at reducing the debt and not looking at how much more they can borrow at a very low interest rate. It is always tempting to borrow with low interest rates, but the city still has to make another loan payment.
Why give the city an increase in taxes to blow through when they can’t responsibly handle the revenue we have already given to them? Sometimes undergoing a correction forces the city to address expenditures that would not have been looked at in the first place.

For Pete's sake Sharon. Run for a seat on the Commission next time. I'm sure someone is back in the audience now that will take over this column for you.

The Bizness

Your view point this week is driving me bonkers!

You have continuously came on here and said that nothing gets you are mad that the commissioners want to get projects done, and realize there are more projects that need to be handled?

Next you want more openness and transparency, and now you are mad that the commissioners are holding town halls (which gives everyone a way to express their views), because you think that it will be them trying to push their agendas onto people.

Thirdly, You claim our budget does not support moving city hall, but in the past you have said they should go room, by room, upgrading in a piecemeal approach which would cost us even more.

This goes to the city commissioners, don't let people with this sort of view point get in the way of getting projects done. Balance the budget, and take care of the city, that is all I ask.

Bizness, you are point on ! Apparently her role is to present the opposing view regardless of what it might be.
For my part, this new commission in the past 30 days has done nothing but project a positive approach to addressing a host of pressing issues. I'm sure we won't always agree with there conclusions, but they certainly seem to be taking positive steps to move Sandusky forward.

How can any of what you are writing about be remotely called a drama?

J. Hartman

Sharon, in the past I attempted to counter punch your comments, but from now on I will try my best not to do that. Why? I understand even if I don't agree with what you are saying, you have every right to say whatever, but at some point we all must collectively work together to build a brighter future for OUR community. I'm not going to give any suggestions, tell you if and why I think you are wrong, nor will I try to imprint any of my thoughts upon you. What I will say is negativity has dragged us into the mindset we are below standard as a community. I will also say there are some very tremendous, talented, and positive folks in our community looking to climb that hill to greatness/respectability again. I appreciate your passion and the fact you fear not sharing your thoughts. Not many can do that. Not asking for you to agree with me either. Just asking that if you have the love you say for the city, show that with actions and not words as actions carry more weight. Again, not asking for you to agree with me, but I do want to point out the rule of 3 fold and the more negativity you project, the more that comes back to you. I hope you have a great remaining week and all are healthy. PS, attached a song for you below titled "One Day" Also, did you know there's a difference between deep water and ice fishing? Can't be both? Everyday you learn something new! Kind of funny?

J. Hartman

There is no such thing as negativity--simply opposing views and opinions.

J. Hartman

Point taken.

I respectfully disagree with both Schwanger and Hartman. There is such a thing as negativity and it goes all the way back to the ancient Chinese, who tried to get it away from their lives in everything they did thus the invention of Fung Shua. Removing negativity from one's life is to gain balance, happines and to allow one to begin the process of creativity and the blossoming of the true inner soul.

So please do not turn your backs on the fact that negativity does not exist. It most certainly does and it is like a cancer that can infect everything in which comes in contact. It eats away at the very fabric of life causing pain, unhappiness and eventually death of allowed to continue.

To have a discussion where two ideas are exchanged and two points of view are DISCUSSED and SETTLED is one thing, To have only ONE side expressed in negativity where the other is not expressed in positivity is something else entirely.

Are you meaning Feng Shui by any chance?

yes, my typing is as bad as my spelling...thank you for the correcting....yes I mean Feng Shui

J. Hartman

Kind of like if you believe in God, you must believe in that other guy? Not a smart butt comment, but I believe that to be truth. I also agree with you, as I see your point, agree, and disagree all in the same. No matter how you, Tim, or myself think, bottom line we all have to work together. The whole will most likely never completely agree, but I do believe these type of back and forth conversations are beneficial! Have a great week!
