Parker: Guns, no roses

Excerpt: The biggest obstacle to the Obama administration’s push for tighter gun control may be its own best argument: Newtown.

This is because nothing proposed in the gun control debates would have prevented the mass killing of children at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and everybody knows it. At best, tighter gun laws will make us feel better.

Let’s review: The Newtown killer was a mentally disturbed young man living with his mother. She had legally purchased her arsenal and had even taught her son how to responsibly handle firearms.

What she did not do was:

1. deal appropriately with her son’s mental illness;

 2. safely contain her guns so that her son could not access them.

As much as anyone, I am eager to do whatever will make a difference. But I’m unconvinced that what is being proposed will provide the solution we seek.

Universal background checks are a perfectly good idea, except that they won’t stop the burglar who recently cleaned out our house of all our legally purchased rifles and shotguns, including an antique belonging to my greatgrandfather, who, as sheriff of Barnwell County, S.C., confiscated the gun from the triple murderer he tracked for three days and finally killed. (I want that gun back, please.)

Those guns are now in circulation among an element of society that has no intention of submitting to a background check or any other wellintentioned effort to ensure that only good guys have guns.

Should we insist that buyers at gun shows submit to a quick background check as they would at any gun store?

Sure. Why not?

Gun control? how bout we start with the big ones on those drones the president is sending to 3rd world countries and blowing people up? huh? that is where i would start! but what do i know.?

The Children Killed by America’s Drones. “Crimes Against Humanity” committed by Barack H. Obama.

This is a list of names of innocent children killed by America’s drones

But behind each name there is the face of a child with a family history in a village in a far away country, with a mom and a dad, with brothers and sisters and friends.

Among the list, are infants of 1, 2, 3 and 4 years old.

i wonder if he wears that Nobel Peace Prize around his neck when he orders these stike? There is nothing nobel about this man...Guess war/murder equals peace.....if your a president that is...

KnuckleDragger

Oh man, when the moochers finally get out of bed, you're gone catch some slack for that comment. You've insulted his royal highness. LOL

bullydogs1971

yeah...i wonder if they know Hitler was time magazines man of the year too back in 1938. just sayin...

Fromthe419

Time Magazine is a joke, Stalin won it twice, Deng Xiaoping twice, Ayatollah Khomeini once, Nikita Krushchev once, and my all-time favorite Ben Bernanke. How is the heck can a central banker be Person of the Year?

KnuckleDragger

He is just using them overseas as practice so that when he becomes our King, he can use them to keep his subjects in line. You will see the likes of Big Dog, Coasterfan, AJ Oliver, and deertracker on their knees bowing to their king. I want to be there with a camera when that happens. LOL

Pete

You watch Bugs Bunny cartoons when you were a kid?

If so, here's a helpfull hint:
Whenever the moocher class posts, read it with the voice of Beaky Buzzard. Except for Brutus, read his with the voice of the Big Dog "I'm going to catch me a fox & cut his tail off"
It puts everything in perspective that way.

WiseManOnceSaid

Incorrect Dialogue Punctuation. Helpfull is spelled helpful. An Ampersand is not correctly used to just replace the word "and". There should be a period after Brutus.

Pete

48 more and I will reach your level of mistakes.

WiseManOnceSaid

I'm not exactly a liberal, but i'm definitely for gun control, but trust me, nothing bothers me more than our drone policy. Not only are we killing innocents, we are falling in love with the technology because it does not put any of our troops in immediate danger. Not to mention a kill order being put on an American over seas helping Al Qeada. Regardless of what he is doing, he is supposed to, if possible, be subject to due process. Gun control is a lib v. cons argument. Drones are not being argued. Occasionally some Republicans mention it as a chance to attack Mr. Obama, but if they take the White House back they will do just the same..

WiseManOnceSaid

p.s. Quit posting articles from other papers columnists unless they are good articles. I know the gun articles stir the pot because so many people comment, but Kathleen Parker and Leonard Pitts are awful. Can We Get Some Friedman Here?

bullydogs1971

....which is why the people of this country need to get rid of this right left paradigm...this 2 party dictatorship......we only have two bad choices when comes to our leadership.....laugh all you want but i honestly believe in Ron Paul and what he tried and continues to try to do.....wake the people up to the realization that we can have a third or even forth choice....i am neither Dem or Rep ...just a man looking for the truth and a leader with common sense....a leader who will spend more time effort and money taking care of "we the people" instead of destroying other countries and lying to us at every turn....to follow a leader just cause of his political party is just juvenile....but very few want to take the time to see what these people are all about...really see where they stand....we just go to the polls and check DEM or REP. Go team go....darn the consequences!

Bluto

You make a good point . Besides , The drone program has been around in some form ,or another for a long time now . Where were the voices of protest then ?

KnuckleDragger

Of course, most people know these measures will do nothing to stop the killing. The only ones who believe they will are the liberal minions who hang on every word that comes from President Obama's mouth. You see, the President is just pushing forward and agenda that he promised to push forward in his second term. This has nothing to do with guns, and everything to do with control. Sand Hook was just a convenient backdrop for the President to use in order to 1) Distract people from the real problems with the budget, and 2) to push forward an agenda that will eventually lead to registration and an avenue for confiscation.

The justice department has already said that expanded background checks will not work without gun registration. The only reason registration isn't in the bill is because it doesn't stand a chance of passing with it in this Congress. So they will find a way to pass a watered down bill as a feel good measure, and hope that the Dems gain control of the house in the next election. If they do, they will go for the whole enchilada, including confiscation. Mark my words, in a few years, if people are dumb enough to put dems in control of both houses, it will happen.

SamAdams

No, there's no centralized gun registration database. Yet. Well, kind of...

You see, although background check paperwork is SUPPOSED to be destroyed after the applicant passes, are you willing to bet anything important to you that it always is? Are you a law-abiding citizen with a CCW? You think THAT'S not recorded?

Doctors are already asking if you own firearms (and if so, how many); and while YOU may have the good sense not to answer, will your CHILDREN? Because they're being asked, too. And let's not pretend the electronic medical records required under Obamacare won't result in a database that can be sorted by such things as, "Yes, I own a gun!" There are already gun confiscations and accused HIPAA violations in the State of New York for those gun owners who once took Ambien (or Adderol, or any host of other prescriptions deemed "psychotropic" but which are also often prescribed for other reasons - certain anti-depressants for itching, baldness, or PMS/menopause issues, for example).

No, there's no centralized database. But trust me: There's a centralized database already, and it's growing rapidly.

bullydogs1971

just backin you up...

JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri State Highway Patrol has twice turned over the entire list of Missouri concealed weapon permit holders to federal authorities, most recently in January, Sen. Kurt Schaefer said Wednesday.

" Father come save us from this madness we're under . God of creation are we blind ? Cause some here are slaves that worship guns that spit thunder . The children that you've made have lost their minds ... " " The Headless Children " by W.A.S.P . Excellent album of the same name !!! And thought provoking , even if you don't agree . Let see how the vote goes .

deertracker

The Al Qaeda sympathizers are out today! It's touching how the usual suspects are so concerned about children that are being taught to kill their(sympathizers) children. Cute!

We can all admit that this legislation is mostly symbolic and feel good stuff but it hurts no one or their rights. If I was a doctor I would ask if they own firearms too. There has been violence against healthcare professionals.

bullydogs1971

I was hoping your would bring that up...who is the real Al Qaeda sympathizers? Well read for your self!

you decide....i still think its wrong to kill babies no matter how you look at it!

deertracker

The real ones posted comments above. Why is it that anything remotely negative about the President is so believable to you guys? It does not matter what the topic. Personally, I don't care about what is going on in Syria. I can't understand why some of you do. They have to win their own freedom. America should stay out of it. Now, let's stay on topic!

KnuckleDragger

The opposite could be asked of you. What is it about this President that makes you believe he is infallible? Are you guys so caught up in the race thing, or that you will be called a racist, that you can't criticize him or admit when he is wrong? I have said it before, and I'll say it again, i've been critical of every President all the way back to Carter. They all do some good things, and some bad things, even President Obama. The problem here is that Democrats are either so enamoured by him, or afraid of being labeled a racist that they just won't admit when he is wrong. He is a human being, not a God. Being critical of him or anyone else in government isn't racist in fact it is healthy. I agree with you on Syria, we need to stay out. We need to stop given foreign countries monetary aid, and stop being the worlds police force. Let the middle eastern countries handle their own hot beds.

Bluto

I agree ; We are our brothers keepers , but we are also strange allies with warring hearts . Just to keep with the musical references . I do so hope someone gets this one . : )

deertracker

I never suggested he was "infallible". No one is. Contrary to what you may think, I don't agree with him on everything. It only seems that way because people like you want to dog him for every little thing whether it is his fault or not. I happen to respect the guy and admire his accomplishments which are many. The only one caught up in the "race thing" are those that are quite simply racist. I have no problem with them or you being a racist. I prefer to know who I am dealing with. Just own it. If it was about race why did Herman Cain, Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton lose? Minorities are not stupid. They, like most voters, vote for those that identify with their concerns. White America needs to look around. It's not that white anymore. Times change, people change and America has changed! Just a fact!

goofus

Why is that Kool-Aid you drink so addictive

deertracker

The constant "KOOL-AID" references are an attempt to inject racism in a more subtle way. We know which demographic enjoys Kool-Aid. It's a cultural thing. Some prefer Tea! We know which demographic that is also. Maybe it is cultural too

Pete

Kool-Aid is now racist? The reference has nothing to do with Jonestown does it? Just racism.

You lefties will try & turn anything into a racist issue.

deertracker

We all know the code. So you really think they are referring to what was drank in Jonestown? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

Pete

Who is "we all"?

Anything to make it racist. It is all you have as an argument. Sad really.

goofus

Kind of interesting what the Obozo SS is going to do with the list and I'm sure he isn't going to be selling the lists to Cabella's or Bass Prop Shops. Probably the same type of deal the other Obozo SS has done.

I fail to see how a background check is going to stop the violence. I fail to see how keeping guns away from law-abiding citizens is going to stop the violence. I want to know why mental illness is spreading at an alarming rate. I want to check out of Hotel California.
