Thumbs up to Sauter, Crafton

ThorSport, Cedar Point, Sandusky Catholic Community Summer Fest, BAANC and others part of this week's Ups and Downs.

THUMBS UP to ThorSport drivers Johnny Sauter and Matt Crafton for finishing 1-2 at their home track, Michigan International Speedway, last week. The dominating performance kept the drivers atop the NASCAR Truck Series point standings in pursuit of a second straight championship for the Sandusky-based race team. Keep the pedal to the metal, boys.

THUMBS UP to local parishioners, family and friends who participated in the Sandusky Catholic Community Summer Fest with a Mile for Mary walk. The group wanted to show their faith, have fun and support the upcoming school year.

THUMBS DOWN to the shutdown of Cedar Point’s GateKeeper roller coaster for two days and a power outage at the park that closed a portion of the park Sunday evening, stranding a few guests on rides temporarily. The park has had its share of bad luck this year, so hopefully it will be smooth sailing from now through HalloWeekends.

THUMBS UP to Sandusky city commissioner Dennis Murray Jr. for his continued commitment to clean energy with the purchase of an electric-powered Tesla. Also, thumbs up to Mr. Murray for allowing Register reporter Melissa Topey to drive his Tesla. You’re a brave man, Mr. Murray.

THUMBS UP to the second straight year of increased enrollment for Sandusky Schools. About 100 more students will be enrolled this year, proving the district must be doing something right.

THUMBS UP to Joe and Pam Jenkins, of Monroeville, for forming the non-profit Bikers Against Abused and Neglected Children. The organization helps children from Erie, Sandusky, Wood, Huron, Seneca and Lorain counties by raising money for such things as clothing, school supplies and Christmas gifts. To donate, send a check or money order to: Bikers Against Abused and Neglected Children, 2012 Cleveland Road W., Huron, OH 44839.
