Edison Bridge open during snowstorm

The Edison Bridge does not close for weather. Repeat: The Edison Bridge does not close for weather. It’s not often law enforcement agencies reach out to reporters to clear up rumors. The give and take is usually the other way around.

But with the piles of snow and drifting winds that made the Thomas A. Edison Memorial Bridge from Ottawa to Erie counties quite treacherous last week, the Ohio State Highway Patrol post was inundated with calls from motorists inquiring as to whether the passage was open. “Please pass this along. We are getting numerous phone calls on this rumor,” a dispatcher said in an email to media outlets Thursday.

The bridge closes only if a car crash needs to be cleared — never for weather. And there were no crashes on Thursday.

So, here’s to clearing the air.

Nor'easter

Quit trying to revise history. The Edison bridge has been closed by drifting snow many times. When it drifts to over 3 feet, vehicles do not get through.

Wow!! Totally NOT TRUE! The bridge HAS been closed in the past due to white outs and blowing snow! They have put barricades up in blizzards and will not let people cross.

Back in the day before the internet and newspapers online, it was always on the radio, "Edsion Bridge has been closed due to white out conditions".

And in other news.....at 6:17pm the State Patrol is reporting MULTIPLE car accidents on the Edison Bridge, due to weather conditions!

Blahahahahaha!

There were accidents everywhere tonight. Hence the level three snow emergencies...

Yeah, I agree with Nor'easter. It has been closed due to weather in the past. I used to have to drive from Sandusky to Toledo everyday, and I can remember OSP closing it due to weather, not accidents. This may not be their practice any longer, but it has been past practice.

They have short memories! Used to live in PC and work in Sandusky and more than once I had to take 6 to Fremont then back to PC because the bridge was closed. I'll admit I'm getting older, but my memory of those drives are just fine.

It was a beatch this am, that's for sure!

Who ever they talked to about the bridge doesn't know what they are talking about cause my coworker lived in port Clinton and the bridge closed a few times like 3 or 4 years ago

Bottom Line

You're all correct. What a strange article.

Wasn't that why they put up their fancy sign, to tell you when the bridge was closed? Now we can justify it's use to tell drivers it's 14 miles to US 250 and driving time is 14 minutes.....big whoopee!

OK register, it should be easy enough to search past articles to see if the bridge has been closed. I remember my friend who lived in Danbury being late to Ehove because the bus had to take 53 to 6 cause the bridge was closed.

my sister used to live in PC and would complain that she had to go the long way because the bridge was closed. think someone's brain is getting frozen being out in this weather too long.
