While photographing children excitedly receiving new winter coats at Church of the Nazarene in Sandusky, one adorable little girl caught my eye.

The 5-year-old was showing her new coat to a friend. “It has fur on it,” I heard her say as she did a little twirl.

Though we were in a heated building, she had on her new striped scarf and orange gloves as well.

She proudly posed for a picture, then I asked for her name. “I’ll write it for you,” she replied. With eyebrows raised, the guardian with her said, “Are you sure you want to do that?” The girl took my pen in her gloved hand and wrote on my notebook.

A ring she placed over her glove sparkled as she wrote. When she set the pen down, my mind scrambled to figure out what it said.

Her guardians had to help me. “Oh, Catalina,” I said, “I knew that ...”
