All is calm, all is bright

One of my family’s favorite Christmas pastimes is watching National Lampoon’s “Christmas Vacation.”

The classic comedy follows character Clark Griswold, played by Chevy Chase, as he tries — and fails — to create the “perfect family Christmas.”

A popular scene from the movie depicts Chase as he covers his house with Christmas lights so vibrant, they drain the entire city’s electricity and can be seen from miles away.

Apparently one fan of the movie took Chase’s house-decorating strategies too literally. While working late Monday night, an editor and I heard police scanner traffic alert area firemen to a house on fire in eastern Erie County.

Within a minute, we learned it was a false alarm. Turns out, it was just a house decked out in its finest Christmas lights — so much, its fiery glow incited an emergency call.

Firemen promptly, and thankfully, called off the pursuit.
