Excerpt from Sunday's editorial: Former Erie County Sheriff John Magnuson died last week, prompting an outpouring of memories and appreciation for his service.
And most everyone seemed to agree: The sheriff was an icon who understood the dynamics of people and the circumstances of life. He saw it in subordinates — of which he had many — and was a teacher; he saw it in victims of crime and served as the conscious of community; he saw criminals and criminal suspects and was the enforcer, a man who respected the rules.
His was a life well-lived, in service to his community.
