Dog killing spurs change

It seems to us the question must be: Is shooting a dog and allowing it to die slowly the proper and appropriate way to respond to a loose dog call?

It's not.

Sandusky police chief Jim Lang said on Thursday he is developing a training program for officers in how to handle loose dog complaints. That's good, but there are legitimate questions whether it's appropriate to even have police officers in charge of loose dog complaints, given the enormity of the usual and important responsibilities officers already have. In the past, dog wardens and animal control officers were assigned these responsibilities, and were trained in the tasks.

Sandusky city commissioners are likely to claim budget constraints forced them to eliminate the job. But the city has a $15 million annual budget, and we're convinced there are still responsible ways to spend taxpayer dollars that have not been explored, given the waste that is ever present in the city budget.

We're glad Lang has decided to develop better animal control response practices. This incident should be viewed as an opportunity to correct bad practices; not endorse them.

FATHER of 1 Says:
Well if your dog had the same body language I would imagine Officer Wilson would have had to shoot your precious pup too

Am I supposed to be surprised?

The Hamburglar

You shouldn't be. That's what the police are supposed to do. That's why Officer Wilson was in the right.

HAMBURGLAR AKA TRISTAFARIA something of other RODS buddy

The homeowner was sitting in his bathroom taking a s...t..(WATCHING) while the dog was terrorizing the neighborhood AGAIN.. Get a Shot/License/collar/and a clue..to bad that dog owner doesn't think they need to be that way okay maybe you cant afford a dog license then you shouldn't own a dog..get over it. SPD did the right thing.thank god no children or neighbors were hurt by the unruly mutt that they claimed to have loved. I would love to see that dogs shots records.. bet $20 for an overdue dog license there isn't one.

BEHAPPY

What's that all got to do with a dog getting shot unjustly? Terrorizing the neighborhood AGAIN? Then why wasn't something done before if this has been going on? So are you telling me since this terrorizing has BEEN going on that we are all right in saying he looked like he got out of his cruiser knowing he was going to kill he dog this time?

Pastor Ron

I think maybe the city should endorse a policy of shoot on sight of any unleashed dog. I bet calls about loose dogs would decrease. Can somebody explain to me how this dog was not acting like a wild animal and not a pet?

BEHAPPY

"PASTOR" could you please tell me why you hate animals so much?

dire wolf

jesus would be proud of your attitude, pastor.

Simple, Ron. The dog retreated to its yard, and barked at the stranger approaching - the friendliest dogs in the world do that. She was standing her ground, not advancing, when she was shot.

Then again, I don't expect an ADMITTED reformed Michael Vick wannabe to understand anything about normal dog behavior.

Father of 1

All of you supporters of Ms. Hansen being a law breaker can donate $50 to her and she can go to the pound and get a black and brown dog named Dahlila they just brought in. It comes with first shots and a license. Something she never provided for poor Lucy. I see the crowbar benefit didn't go so swell. Oh well keep trying. You won't see a big payday. Unfortunately you will have to continue to work. Thanks SPD for keeping us all safe. Too bad we have so many bad apples in Sandusky!

Newsflash Father, nobody's supporting Ms. Hansen, except possibly deer tracker. We're supporting the DOG, and the concept of less aggressive police. It seems everything is zero sum with you - either the cops are gods or they're the devil, either the officer was wrong or Ms Hansen was wrong. That's a pretty childish approach.

BEHAPPY

Sandusky isn't the only people waiting for justice here. It's all over the internet. I don't believe anyone is looking for a payday. Just justice for the ....did I see you say POOR LUCY?

Father of 1

It wasn't Lucy's fault she died. It was Ms. Hansen and Mr. Likes fault. They raised her and didn't take care of her. She was considered vicious due to not being taken care of and the end result was death. Period. Officer Wilson did everything right.

AND the officer's fault. Notice I didn't say OR.

You seem to have difficulty with indirect versus proximal cause.

BEHAPPY

Vicious means not being taken care of? Really? That's the reason for the killing?

Rod Farva

You are a master debater

She types with one hand. That explains all the double posts.

Yep cant stop double clicking the mouse

What the City of Sandusky should do is offer her a new rescue dog within the next 90 days, and a sincer apology about the tradegy that happened. Explain that is really was a mistake, and that this is not how they feel about animals. She hasn't yet asked for a dime of our tax dollar, and maybe if people quit blameing it all on her (which can be/is be debated), she might want to move on and let bygones be bygones. The police need to turn this into a positive by admitting they wished they had that situation to do all over again, and with what they now know, things may end better that they did for Lucy. I don't know her. but i don't think she's in it for much or any money, yet. I don't know. In life, Integrity isn't really about the money. Just say your sorry it happened, mean it, & offer a Rescue dog. It just might help everybody, who knows for sure?

Government admit it's wrong? Look around you. From the deficit, war on drugs, and foreign occupations at the federal level on down to the Huron Greenway locally, when have you known government to do anything but double down on stupid?

jes1413

Give her a new dog? So she can let it roam the streets and harass people or get hit by a car. Her ability to take care of her dog makes you wonder about her ability to care for her child.

Advocate For Animals

I don't think she's out for money either. One thing she said is that Wilson didn't even have the compassion or decency to apologize to her. All he was concerned about was slapping her with citations. How lacking in compassion can a person be?

I don't know Donna personally but I was at the rally. Seems to me all she wants is justice for her dog. She wants to make sure something like this never happens again to someone else's pet and as things stand now it unfortunately could happen again. Any one of our dogs could be the next Lucy for doing nothing more than protecting their property or accidently slipping away from a tie out or a fenced in yard.

lifetimeresident

Mr. Wilson and The Mailcarrier lady were totally in the wrong. Had the mail carrier fell as she was running, and been bitten, I would support her call. Mr. Wilson is a grown adult. I'm sure a few bites from a dog he could of lived with. Shame on both of them. Your both public servents. You do get paid. Work is not always easy. Take the good with the bad and suck it up.

Father of 1

Wow. Dumb and dumber. Do any of you read what you type? Really? Now the mail carrier and the officer are supposed to get bitten because they are adults and get paid? The city and officer also shouldn't admit guilt when what the officer did was within the guidelines of dealing with a loose vicious dog. He is not guilty. If the dog wouldn't have been loose trying to attack people the dog would still be here. I know the younger generation feels everyone owes them something but in this case it isn't happening. Move out of our city since you hate it so much. Our city would be a lot better off without you. If you don't feel you need to follow the law get out. Officer Wilson followed the law. If he didn't please explain what law he broke. Oh that's right you won't find it. SPD isWINNING! Ha Ha

dire wolf

SPD is winning here? really? Is that why they are getting backlash from so many citizens around the country? is that why they are making immediate changes and developing training programs to train their officers now? winning??? good call father of 1 unfortunate child, your dumb meter is buzzing red.

deertracker

AGREED!
