Check out the dork with the camera on his head

Personal pride went right out the window as I covered last Thursday's John McCain rally. Maybe "out the window" isn't the best way to put it, "over my head" is probably a better description.

The Web department purchased a new "toy" in a point-of-view camera. This really isn't a toy as it is going to provide us another way to document life around Sandusky from a different angle. And, in turn, make things more interesting for you the reader. Or in this case, you the watcher.

In case you haven't read the newspaper, watched the news or listened to the radio, Sen. John McCain was in Sandusky promoting his bid to become the 44th President of the United States. We covered the event with as much staff as we could because it isn't every day, month, year, decade, or score for that matter, that a candidate for President comes to our town.

For the event I designated myself as a still photographer. That doesn't mean I have to stay perfectly "still" during the event. It means I will be taking photos with a camera, taking one image at a time, or 8 per second, but who's counting. In other words, I'm not taking any video of the event.

Except from the top of my head.

I had the point-of-view camera with me, so why not use it. The setup for the camera isn't very attractive (see photos to the upper right), but the camera does a good job capturing video and sound. Just make sure you don't have a strobe, or flash, attached to the top of your still camera as it gets in the way. You'll see what I mean if you watch the video. You'll also see Alice Blakely of Sandusky getting her photo taken with Joe "the Plumber" Wurzelbacher.

And just a side note, this was the first time Sen. McCain had ever met Joe the Plumber in person. And it happened in little ol' Sandusky.
