Protestors say let children die

Matt Westerhold
Jul 29, 2014

This protest  led by a radio show host is equal parts shameful and frightening.

Not my America

Comments

Bottom Line

You've made it clear that you think enforcing our laws and defending our borders is shameful and frightening. How many illegal alien children have you now taken in on your dime? Drop the God complex and come back down to earth.

The Big Dog's back

Oh boy, another Alex Jones follower.

Contango

@ Mr. Westerhold:

What did you think of Geo. Will's comment?

How many of "God's children" should Erie Co. take in?

Matt Westerhold

Thanks Contango. The Register posted the comment. His recommendation seems well-grounded, unlike the protest. The flag-waving advocates of deportation without process are having a reactionary response — whipped up as it were — and seem to have a mob like  'others must suffer' attitude. And then they sang 'God Bless America.' They should go to Ellis Island in New York Harbor and advocate for removal of the Statute of Liberty, or at least its plaque.

Contango

Re: "well-grounded,"

@ Mr. Westerhold:

So you agree?

Which leads to my above second question: Where's your advocacy?

Why stop with the current influx? Why not invite all comers?

There are an estimated 1.9 billion people world-wide living below the UN designated poverty line.

Come on down!

Maggdi

Yes, Mr. Westerhold why not the rest of the world?
Why are the people who live in the western hemisphere first in line?
Are their persecutions any worse than those of other parts of this planet?

Licorice Schtick

Couldn't find anything in either video clip even remotely related to the headline "Protestors say let children die."

Please explain further.

JMOP

I thought I missed something too. I never heard that.

I've read where some of these adolescents are part a gang (can't recall the gangs name) and are recruiting the kids that also came here. They're pretty much creating the same mess here, for the reasons why they left their own country.

The Hero Zone's picture
The Hero Zone

I agree Licorice.

Matt Westerhold

Thanks Licorice Stick for requesting further explanation about the headline. It is correct because 1+1=2. Watch this link.

Maggdi

I hope my life never has to experience such horrors. And I certainly sympathize with those that have. But I truly do not understand why she is more worthy of a place in line than say the Iraqi Christians who are being decimated now. Or people in African countries who are certainly experiencing similar tragedies. Perhaps the women who live in misogynistic societies would have a leg up....
Is there a line? A number?

Licorice Schtick

So then you don't dispute that nothing in the original video clips, and so therefore, nothing in the piece, even remotely related to the headline "Protestors say let children die."

For the TLDR inhibited, the newly-introduced video is an MSNBC interview through Spanish/English translation of a Honduran girl. Threatened with death by a gang, she payed coyotes in attempt to get reach sister in U.S., and now faces deportation to Honduras.

Matt, no mention of whether the sister is here legally. No mention of whether she is seeking asylum. I can see why she would prefer the more economically promising option if the U.S., especially because her sister is here, but was she not safe once she reached Mexico? (Where they speak her language, btw.)

There are a lot of question here, but there is no reason to think this is a typical case. I don't see how that clip validates your headline.

I think you are trying to hold an untenable position by arguing against something your opponents never said.

The truth is, most illegal immigrants are here to Get More Money, and little else.

The idea that opposing illegal immigration is some sort of genocide is nonsense.

@ Mr. Westerhold:

Are you just posting inflammatory headlines in pursuit of web hits?

It's not up to your usual caliber of editorial. In fact, it could be mistaken for trolling.

The New World Czar

You are correct. I've said it before, I will say it again...

SR ==> "Ratings and Revenue".

Contango

Salespeople use the fallacious criteria of web hits in order to sell online advertising.

Based on the amt. of visible advertising, SR's sales people are doin' a lousy job. Or it could be that the prices are out-of-line.

Bloggers who help to pump up the number of web hits should be given the epaper free.

Maggdi

Deer seemed to think it was his business to assume Contango didn't have an epaper subscription and suggests Contago was obligated to pay for the epaper for his comment to be worthy of consideration.... sooo we'll change the subject, since that may not be the case..... to Deer's right not to have to answer that question on the grounds he may incriminate himself....

CommonsenseNow

Thank you for reminding me of why I do not purchase your paper. If a selfie was print versus picture, that is what your article would be ... just one big selfie to post to get a lot of likes. You are so biased in your myopic view, you can't see how disgusting your tactics are in painting out a group of Americans who don't like your selfie as hateful. Get over yourself.

CommonsenseNow

Also, Matt, there are some common perceptual distortions you might want to read up on including stereotypes, halo effect, selective perception, and self-fulfilling prophecy. This might help readjust some distorted schemata with which you are burdened.

Last time I checked from talking with REAL people in the grassroots conservative/freedom movement - versus brainlessly buying into what controlled media with an agenda are pushing - is they have three simple beliefs, 1) we should pay our way and not leave the bill we run up to our future generations, 2) we need a small, limited government who is not meddling in our affairs, 3) and we need free markets where the government does not pick winners and losers.

Where's your article on cities across the nation passing laws saying you need a license to take a hot meal to a homeless man sleeping in the cold? But that doesn't fit into your narrative because it exposes bureaucratic government for what it is. There are hundreds of examples. But who do YOU focus on? Hard-working Americans who disagree with you.

And true change, a true shock to the status quo, will only happen at the bottom, when we lay down our weapons of political war (labels and stereotypes) and realize the fight is not amongst us outside of bureaucratic government; we do not have the power to write law, use the IRS to target and harass people, send out drones to kill Americans without a trial, monitor all American electronic communications (NSA). Our battle is the same as the battle across human history, making sure government does not get too corrupt where it corrupts us and our opportunities. Where's your story on that?

Quit picking on granny and focus on the real issues.

The Big Dog's back

So you agree with bush and Repubs in general picking dictators of other countries,(Iraq, Afghanistan), but disagree with Gov backing renewable energy.

Donegan

You must, Libya and Egypt are good examples.

Contango

Re: "bush,"

Usual off-topic blather.

CommonsenseNow

I won't address your ass-umptions regarding Bush and RINOs because it's not worth it. Regarding renewable energy.
1) Have you calculated the cost of solar, wind, and other "renewable sources" in a per KW rate? What is it? Are you willing to pay it? Can you pay for it?
2) How efficient are renewable energies?
3) What is the useful life of investment for renewable energy sources. Pick just one.
4) How do you store it? I'm sure you've studied the issue and know this is the million dollar question. And if you say lithium batteries, than please tell me the thousand dollar problem with that answer.
5) What has been the ROI on government subsidies to renewable energy companies?
6) What are you going to do with China and other countries who don't subscribe to our unilateral green plan and our now causing greater pollution because they've taken our manufacturing jobs the EPA has run out and have far fewer safety and environment standards than us? That immense pollution of course is carried in the wind across the globe including your back yard.
7) What do you say to Al Gore when he makes a speech on greenhouse gases and then gets into his private jet to make another one? An hour of flying a private jet burns as much fuel as an entire year of driving a car.

These questions are JUST THE TIP of this discussion. Are you more than half brain-celled one liners ... or do you actually have any intelligent answers? I know your game. You try to make others work in answering your half-baked questions. Why don't you try answering some real questions, doggie-dog.

Why you are bothering to try and distract readers from what was posted by announcing it is boring is baffling to me. I would presume you would want better from candidates and incumbents. If you fancy yourself a progressive, this kind of behavior is rather one-sided and quite status-quo.

sugar

So enforcing Federal immigration laws is tantamount to allowing "children to die" ?

mikeylikesit

that seems to be the situation..

Bottom_Line

Yeah, didn't you know? They're completely synonymous.

exsanduskian

I don't see any comments by you Matt. Why not answer any of their questions? Are they right in their comments and you have no intelligent answers? If you answer just one question, answer how many you have in your home.

SamAdams

Tell me, Mr. Westerhold, is there any OTHER crime you'd condone in the pretense to do otherwise would "let children die?" What of the bank robber who needs the money to pay the mortgage and keep a roof over his kids' heads? What of the murderer who takes pre-emptive action "just in case?" and, you know, to protect his (or somebody else's) kids? What of the burglar who assaults his victims during a home invasion, but was only stealing because he wanted to buy groceries? What of the drug dealer who supports his family with the proceeds of his illegal sales?

In the first place, your assertion is nothing but hyperbole to begin with. NOBODY has suggested we "let the children die." What people ARE saying is that the law needs to be followed, not least because BORDER SECURITY MATTERS. If you disagree, then stop locking your door and publish your address so all of the rest of us can invade and enjoy free food, a roof over our heads, etc.

Matt Westerhold

Thanks Sam Adams, but generally when one is accused of a crime that person undergoes a trial before being declared guilty. It works differently, in this instance, for you. You simply declare their guilt and call for their deportation.

Contango

Re: "a trial before being declared guilty,"

@ Mr. Westerhold:

What percentage of illegals that have been released eventually show up for their hearing?

How is not this so-called 'due process of law' a sham?

(Guilt before proven innocent? Reads like the IRS and other 'fine' governmental agencies. )

Different strokes for different folks.

Matt Westerhold

Being presumed innocent wasn't designed to apply only when it's convenient.

Contango

Re: "designed,"

Though in application it often is.

See: NDAA & Patriot Act.

Guess it depends on whose ox is being gored eh?

Can you answer my questions or not?

Bottom_Line

Yours would be the first he addresses directly. He tried ignoring me before deactivating my login to post anything else.

deertracker

Presumed innocent? In what world? SURELY NOT THIS ONE!

Matt Westerhold

Thanks Contango, but your question is rude and accusatory. You and I likely have an equivalent stake as taxpayers in U.S. immigration policy and any funds being spent on border security issues, including this one. We both have a right to an opinion. The assumption in your question that I should bear a greater share of that burden because you think what I'm advocating — that we not send children to be slaughtered — will be too expensive is arrogant and ignorant.

Contango

Re: "your question is rude and accusatory."

@ Mr. Westerhold:

And your terse 1:38 PM response wasn't?

If the vast majority are not showing up for hearings, doesn't that make the immigration policy a sham?

Children slaughtered? Are you aware of the past annual headcounts in Chicago?

The New Prohibition has not and will not work. Advocate to change it.

Horace Mann

We are guaranteed "due process." That does not always mean a trial. But Matt changes the subject. The question of guilt was not heretofore part of the discussion; it was about children here illegally. You're trying to talk us in circles, Matt.

Contango

Re: "guaranteed 'due process.'"

Void where prohibited by law. See: NDAA and Patriot Act.

deertracker

.....and the Black community!

Contango

Re: "Black community,"

Nonsense.

Matt Westerhold

Thanks Horace Mann, buti If it's about children being here "illegally" it would have to be established they are "illegal." You don't establish "guilt" by forming an opinion.

Contango

Re: "You don't establish "guilt" by forming an opinion."

@ Mr. Westerhold:

Then why bother to detain them?

Licorice Schtick

Unless the courts say otherwise, interdiction, detention, and deportation, done according to the law, is due process of law, by definition.

There are countless example of "due process" that do not involve a courtroom trial, but are still fair, just, and constitutional.

No one is seriously claiming that deporting people who are actually here legally is a significant problem. Insisting on more process is really about obstruction and spreading available resources thinner so that more people can enter and stay illegally.

CommonsenseNow

How about you write a piece as a reporter and not journalist? Why not explore both sides of the issue honestly? I can appreciate the argument you just made much more than your cherry-picking stories that further a hateful and incorrect stereotype about hard-working Americans just expressing their viewpoint. You can't appreciate those who cannot rise above their biases, and I agree ... but I don't see you rising above your own.

There are very real questions that need to be asked here. You ask none of them. You appeal to one type of person with this story and headline - the person who has bought into labels about grassroots conservative activism, the real underdog when contrasted with large, powerful entrenched government who abuses its power against those who dare to question them.

Stereotypes have been used in some very ugly ways in our history so people didn’t feel so bad as they put chains on men and whips to their backs. Be careful about your stereotypes, Matt. It actually would be nice to see an honest debate about this crisis with all the rhetoric toned down so that real solutions can be reached. All sides have something to add to this debate. No one is 100% right.

PapaJoe

Unless it is a law enforcement official then there guilty until proven innocent and then you still try to hang them!

deertracker

Agreed!

SamAdams

Are they within our borders? Are they citizens? Done. SEE how quick and easy that was?

Meanwhile, trials aren't just held to determine guilt and innocence. They're held to follow up any guilty verdicts with a PUNISHMENT phase. Certainly, jailing or fining someone without due process would be very bad (and very unconstitutional). But nobody's jailed here, nobody's fined here, nobody's water boarded or even forced to listen to Barry Manilow. Again, where's your problem?

Also, you failed to address my final question: If you're so into the open borders thing and you DON'T consider these invaders to be criminals, why do you lock your doors? Why won't you feed me and shelter me and give me medical care if I break in and refuse to leave? Do you want me to DIE?

Babo

They are refugee children under a law signed by President GW Bush in 2008 and they are entitled to due process protections. They are not criminals under international law or American law.

Contango

Re: "due process protections."

What percentage show up for their hearings?

How is this application of the 'rule of law' not a sham?

Babo

Your points are irrelevant.

Contango

Re: "irrelevant."

Regardless; the questions remain.

How can one claim to have rule of law without enforcement?

How is the current process not akin to anarchy?

Babo

Again, your questions are irrelevant and underscore the fact that you want to selectively follow laws. You don't respect the initial legal requirement that these children are accorded refugee status under a law signed by President GW Bush, let alone International law, so you have no standing to ask any questions as you are the anarchist.

Contango

Re: "questions are irrelevant,"
