Wow, here it is August already! Whenever I run into people who know I am doing a Big Year, the first question is always……………….so what’s your number? So let’s get right to it. For the month of July I was able to add 7 new species to the list, bringing my total to 214 for the year.

April was a very exciting month for birding as new migrants arrived each week.

Two very unlikely birds showed up — one very striking in appearance, and one not so pretty but just as special.

March was full of mystery — the mystery of migration, the mystery of a lost tombstone and a mysterious woodpecker.

Winter’s grip did not want to let go, so birding was again somewhat limited by the weather.

February is the shortest month of the year, but I still managed to add 18 species of birds — making 85 my total so far — and rescue two birds. I traveled 140 miles, and I had two encounters with local police while birding.

I have traveled to other parts of the world to look at birds, but the place where I enjoy them the most is my own backyard.

My name is Mary. You may have read that I am doing a Big Year for Erie County.
