Road Trip Day 1: From Bay to Bay

We made it to Pennsylvania. Barely.

Within view of Sandusky Bay, the first day of this year’s road trip from bay to bay started in Sandusky and ended in Linesville, PA.

Our journey started at the corner of Columbus Avenue and Washington Street (U.S. 6) in downtown Sandusky next to the Red Wagon as Dave Kluding was setting up for a Monday morning at the Gyro Cart.

From there we started following the interstate shields for U.S. 6 East. And there were plenty of them, 86 to be exact. Will was counting them on his road trip checklist.

We made stops at Sandusky Paint, Sandusky Steel, Cedar Lanes, Bayshore Beverage, the Maples Motel, Erie MetroParks’ Eagle Point, McDonald’s and BGSU Firelands in Huron. All these places, and many others, helped make this trip possible.

For the stretch between Sandusky and Cleveland we drove shotgun to Lake Erie and as we left Cleveland the route dipped to the south as it entered Pennsylvania.

We started the trip at 9 a.m. and didn’t get to the eastern side of Huron until after noon. We didn’t think we would make it to Pennsylvania before sundown.

Our stops included Ohio towns like Vermilion, Lakewood, Lorain, Andover Village and Chardon.

Chardon had a town square a lot like Milan. U.S. 6 zig zags through the downtown area and was a bit confusing as we walked the square.

The main difference between this year’s trip over last has been how much more these boys eat a year later. It is amazing how much more a 7 and 8-year-old can eat compared to a 6 and 7-year-old. We stopped for lunch a couple times and ice cream three times.

The state of Pennsylvania appreciates U.S. 6 more than Ohio. If you compare the signage on the PA side, you will see mile markers with “Do 6” and the mile markers. We arrived in Linesville and are in the first 10 miles of the state.

Our plan was to stay at a motel, but as we arrived there was no one there to check us in. Our “back-up” plan was tent camping at the Pymatuning State Park and that is where we are for the night with a sunset view of Pymatuning Lake.

Today we will travel most of the state of Pennyslvania including a visit to the Grand Canyon. You will have to watch our live blog for more on that.

Stop It

I worked in the steel/pipe/mechanical construction industry while my son was growing up. I had to travel where the work was. It's a good thing you can take your boys on working vacations, Jason. Ya gotta love it!

Stop It- I appreciate the support from the Register and the community. There aren't a lot of days off in the newspaper business and it's nice to be able to do something that has an interest to readers and my boys can be a part of.

Thanks for sharing this trip, Jason! It's fun and we all can "travel with you" on it. I'm enjoying it!
