Voinovich and his entourage

U.S. Sen. George Voinovich’s announcement that he won’t seek another term reminded me of when he came to visit the Sandusky Register a couple of years ago.

He wanted to oppose the latest proposal to bring casino gambling to Ohio, so he asked if he could meet with some of our reporters and editors.

Every U.S. senator I ever met travels with a group of aides.

When the receptionist phoned to tell me the senator was here, I rushed downstairs to greet the senator and his entourage.

There was no entourage. There was just Sen. Voinovich, sitting in a chair, reading the copy of the Register.

When we talked to him, I mentioned I expected him to have people with him.

Voinovich replied that he did have a driver, but that his wife was busy shopping for antiques in downtown Sandusky.

Even as a lifelong Democrat I have to say the senator has always come across as a very decent, down to earth man of integrity. A true public servant, and a job well done.
