Dogs run free, but owners will pay

As the new Erie MetroParks dog park nears completion, it's time to start talking about the fees that dog owners will pay for the privilege of using it.

The new dog park, to be located in Osborn Park, will provide a safe place for dogs to leave the leash and run around. One fenced-in area will be for smaller dogs, while another will be for bigger dogs. Plans call for the dog park to open Sept. 7, said Stephen Dice, director-secretary of Erie MetroParks.

Parks officials plan to charge $15 to dog owners to allow them to register for one year to use the park, Dice said. To register, dog owners will need a certificate from their veterinarian that the dog has obtained all of its necessary shots and will have to prove the dog has an Erie County dog license.

Dice said the winner of a contest to name the dog park will be announced in a couple of weeks. Entries for the contest closed June 1.

Tom,

Thanks for the update. I for one am looking forward to using this park. You posting this info saved me (and I'm sure others) from having to call the county and figure out the details.

Tom...I would just like to thank you for the continuous coverage you have given this dog park. You have been there from the beginning and constantly asking for any updates. I really have appreciated it. Hopefully you will be there for the Grand Opening!

What happened the dog park being free to use? Other cities don't charge fee's, but of course in Sandusky there is always someone out to make a buck. Our tax dollars are paying for the upkeep of that entire park. What about people here just visting and want to take there dogs there to run. They should not have to pay $15.00 just for a weekend.

how will they know when their year is up? calendar year or one year from date of purchase?

First of let me thank you for using your blog to get actual information out to the people, instead of complaning about your job or telling us how good you are at your job.

Secondly, $15 dollars a year is not much, but come on MetroParks! You are even going to charge us to use the dog park. When I lived in Virgina Beach such things were free. I think the local leaders could learn a lot by looking at how others do things. I will give you a hint, they do not milk the citizens for every dime they can get out of them.

If you don't want to pay the $15 for use of the park, then don't. Get your own yard for your pet to run in. The area will need maintained, and that comes at a cost. If you want a service, you pay for it. It is the American way. If you don't like it, then stay home and whine to someone who cares.

First dog fight and that will be the end of that park. How are you going to monitor all this? This is way too much liability to allow your dog to run without a leash.

dog lover,
I guess the price is all a matter of what you are used to....when she was editing my blog post, my editor commented that $15 a year is cheap, because at a dog park she visited in Chicago, the price was $5 per dog per day.
