As the new Erie MetroParks dog park nears completion, it's time to start talking about the fees that dog owners will pay for the privilege of using it.
The new dog park, to be located in Osborn Park, will provide a safe place for dogs to leave the leash and run around. One fenced-in area will be for smaller dogs, while another will be for bigger dogs. Plans call for the dog park to open Sept. 7, said Stephen Dice, director-secretary of Erie MetroParks.
Parks officials plan to charge $15 to dog owners to allow them to register for one year to use the park, Dice said. To register, dog owners will need a certificate from their veterinarian that the dog has obtained all of its necessary shots and will have to prove the dog has an Erie County dog license.
Dice said the winner of a contest to name the dog park will be announced in a couple of weeks. Entries for the contest closed June 1.
