So, what do you think of Palin?

Tom Jackson
Mar 23, 2010

Well, the pick of Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate has given everyone something to talk about, hasn't it?

In my Aug. 13 blog posting, "A Woman for Vice President?" I explained why I thought it seemed quite possible that at least one of the candidates for vice president would turn out to be a woman, even though national pundits were mostly mentioning men.

I wrote, "If Obama picks a white male as his running mate, I would think pressure would build on McCain to pick a woman."

My blog also pointed to Sarah Palin, although that didn't come from me -- it came from a reader comment. On my August 4 blog posting, someone posting as "Sarah Palin" wrote, "Come on McCain, give Sarah Palin a look." My wife spotted the comment and asked if I'd noticed the governor of Alaska posted on my blog. Of course, you can use any name you like when you post a comment here.

It's too early to judge the wisdom of McCain's pick, but the early attack line by the Obama camp that Palin lacks experience rings false. After all, she's the governor of a state, and has more executive experience than Obama, Biden or McCain. My boss, a woman, wants me to point out she has more experience hunting moose than the other three.

The consensus so far seems to be that Palin was a risky pick. We'll see how she does when she speaks in prime time tonight.

That term "PUT LIPSTICK ON THE PIG" has been used by BOTH sides quite a few times in the past. Get over it. Seems like all the right wingers can do is scatterbrain their people to complain about words said. Same with the complaining about the garbage bags filled with rally flags you thought they were "desecrating the flag" by bagging them up when cleaning up. IS THAT ALL YOU HAVE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT?
Pretty pathetic that all you can do is rip petty things. How about getting back to the real issues like Mrs. Fertility being a complete nutcase & not watching her breeding little witches plus old man McCain hating on unions and people that make less than $5million a year. Republicans are rich bastards and have to be OUT OF WASHINGTON if our country is gonna survive. This country was built on DEMOCRA..... not REPUBLICA.

Anonymous

Jeb Bush & Co stole the election in Fla. Watch it be payed off this time if no Obama landslide If Republicans win this term...look out...It'll only be worse than it is now for common folk.
Unless you make $5million a year Old Geezer McCain & his maverick poor people haters will come a callin'. Get ready for the country to take a 180 degree turn backwards and the old rich will not only keep our military(some insane never to be brought back) in Iraq...but now butt our faces in Afghanistan for MORE money wasted and things that they don't even WANT US THERE for.

In answering your question I merely quoted what you wrote. Run your post through spell check before you post if your spelling typos bother you.

If Maher is indeed a Libertarian then he should be endorsing Barr or even Paul.

I don't watch Maher, but you may be misunderstanding in that he's saying he's a libertarian not a Libertarian. Note the small 'l'.

I wouldn't mind Obama's social liberalism IF he didn't use big government as the means to achieve his ends. He's a Marxist.

I thought that there was perhaps hope for you, but you remain politically muddle-headed.

Get the book, read it and get back to me. And quit drinking the Obama kool-aid.

To MHL:

Quit watching and listening to self-promoting Hollywood types like Maher and learn to think for yourself.

A libertarian believes in individual responsibility and would not back Obama. Obama believes in collective responsibility and that's what makes him a Marxist.

If you are indeed interested, here are a couple economic and political libertarian sites to help educate you:

Republicans and Democrats drink the same brand of kool-aid, just different flavors.

palin has banned books and wants to teach creationism in schools. she is against abortion in the event of incest or rape. she says that it is "god's will" that we are in iraq. that's all we need in another bible-beating christian conservative hypocrite in office. i love how you people feel sorry for her idiot pregnant daughter. if it was obama's daughter that was pregant, you would be OUTRAGED!

Adam
Please check your facts (use factcheck.org) before you post erroneous information. Palin did NOT ban books.

Anonymous

She just got a passport 2 years ago! What can she offer us? McCain is trying to pickup the woman's vote that can't vote for Hillary.

Anonymous

Please explain how you know so much about Palin's religious views?

If these are in fact her views, has she attempted to do this in her home state? Do they teach only creationism is Alaska?

If Obama's daughter was pregnant she would have quietly had an abortion and you would never hear about it. Agree or disagree with Palin’s pro-life views on abortion, you have to respect the fact that she had a choice, abort the child and avoid the political backlash or have her daughter keep the child and meet it head on with her head held high.

People respect Palin for that point, she is standing by her believes and values even those some may view it as optically damaging.

That's why thinking people still support Bush. Yes, many people still support him. The war in Iraq is ugly, unpopular and politically damaging, but it is still the right thing to do for the long term. A good President does what is right, even if it makes him unpopular. Popularity does not make a great President. Only history will dictate whether or not his presidency was successful. Not the price of gas.

Look at how history views Lincoln, great President right? One of the best of all time? He had the lowest approval rating of any President in history. The Civil war was very unpopular, even more then the war in Iraq, but where would we be today if Lincoln(R) took the tack of popularity over the right thing to do?

To everyone who believes that this economy is where it is b/c of the Republicans. I would like to start by going back to the end of the Clinton term. Our economy was in a recession. I am not saying it was President Clintons fault but the facts are, we were. President Bush took over and we were still in a recession. Not to long after, 9/11 took place. This made our economy worse off then what it was. Then President Bush had to deal with Katrina which did not help our economic situation. For all of you who like to make blame and point fingers at the republicans and president Bush, lets recall that during Bush's term, the democrats took over in the house and they demanded banks offer "arm" loans to all the Katrina victims. Believe it or not, this was the democratic party. This is why we are in the housing crisis today. Not b/c of the republicans or Bush, b/c the democratic party demanded banks to let victims take out loans at low interests rates with a baloon clause attached. Now, I am not denying that our economy is struggling right now. However, this is do to the life turning events that have happened over the past 7 years. Here is something for all of you to think about-

CAPITAL GAINS TAX

MCCAIN
0% on home sales up to $500,000 per home (couples). McCain does not propose any change in existing home sales income tax.

OBAMA
28% on profit from ALL home sales. (How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income.)

DIVIDEND TAX

MCCAIN
15% (no change)

OBAMA
39.6% - (How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be paying nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama becomes president. The experts predict that 'Higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would crash the stock market, yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.')

INCOME TAX

Single making 30K - tax $4,500
Single making 50K - tax $12,500

Married making 60K - tax $16,800
Married making 75K - tax $21,000
Married making 125K - tax $38,750
Under Obama, your taxes could almost double!

INHERITANCE TAX

MCCAIN
- 0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax)

OBAMA
Restore the inheritance tax

Many families have lost businesses, farms, ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their assets to loved ones will only lose them to these taxes.

NEW TAXES PROPOSED BY OBAMA

New government taxes proposed on homes that are more than 2400 square feet. New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren't high enough already) New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water, electricity) New taxes on retirement accounts, and last but not least....New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!!

You made a good point there, pal! Just NOT in the way I think you intended! You wrote that Palin's daughter had a CHOICE about whether or not she would keep her baby. BINGO, Einstein! CHOICE is something Palin and the Republicans want to DENY all other women! Why do you Republican/conservatives assume and accuse anyone who does not share your political and personal philosophy by saying "If this was Obama's daughter, she would have had an abortion". That is a totally assinine assertion! I am a liberal thinking person, but that does not mean I am "for abortion". No one is really "for" abortion, but for the rights of women to make their OWN reproductive decisions. Abortion is not a choice I would personally make, and if my daughter was pregnant out of wedlock, I would not simply say "OK, off to the abortion clinic with you!" There are many different family situations and beliefs and who has the right to decide for another person what their choice should be? This blanket condemnation of all liberals and Democrats regarding abortion rights is absolutely ridiculous.

John McSame&Sarah Palin,
Why do talk about abolishing abortion in the U.S. let me tell you i do not agree with abortion for all cases but for loud mouth Sarah to say that even in cases of incest or rape will not get abortions is a bit over the.First of all Rowe vs.Wade was passed in january 1973 under Nixon then we had Ford,Regan two terms George the first one term and the decision was never overturned so John & Sarah I think you should hop of that platform it is a moot point. The G.O.P.candidates may think they need to dictate to the public but we do live in the U.S.A. NOT RUSSIA.And Mr.McSame you did serve honorably in the viet nam war but you did not have the brains to be an admiral like his grandfather or father.Mr.McSame it is public knowledge that you were a carouser and quite the partier in the service and after you returned state side. After all when you came home you acted like the chump you are and ran around on yourfirst wife and found another partier like your self only thing is she was a millionaire so you said here is my ticket.Mr McSame stop acting like you are such a good person, you are not.And Sarah you are not the changer you say you are either after allyou had more earmarked money percapata than the rest of the country so stop stateing that you stand for change you do not.P.t.a.president,small town mayor, small state gov.the whole state is one third the size of L.A.california.I would hate like heck to see the damage that you and frick & frack would do if you got into office. You want change like the devil wants christianity. So John boy & silly Sarah start talking about issues and the country and stop whinning, for such a seasoned polatician you can not take the heat so as they say stay out of the kitchen oh my that is right you have "ANSWERED ANYTHING YET HAVE"the g.o.p.has been protecting you from the media.Keep on practicing your one liners they may need you for late night t.v. you and john McSame could have one funny show.

A number of your simple facts are plainly wrong. In addition, your "explanation" based on so-called "life turning events" is at best amatuerish.

The responses to 9-11 and Katrina have left much to be desired. When we diverted our national attention from Afghanistan to Iraq, we squandered the opportunity to catch Bin Laden. Our activities in Iraq have stressed our military, burdened the country financially for decades and jeopardized our prestige in the world community.

Loans to Katrina victims had nothing to do with the financial debacle that has occurred and has allowed foreign countries such as the Chinese to have significant stakes in our largest corporations for bargain basement prices.

We have paid a significant price by allowing misinformation and half truths serve as the basis of our decision making. The Republicans are running a campaign of lies and distortion. I see NONE of the change that they so slyly claim that they will nake.

Anonymous

The unofficial poll taken by the SR shows McCain/Palin ahead by almost 2 to 1. You may not like her because of her party, but she is becoming more and more credible as is the Republican ticket.
We repubs know there is corruption in gov't on both sides of the isle and the American public sees her as a "Dirty Harry". A clean sweep if you will!
Like it or not she tough when addressing an issue neither side is willing to take on.

McCain and Palin are out-and -out LYING at every campaign appearance they make. Palin has been repeating verbatim her self-serving speech from the RNC for 2 weeks now. It is full of untruths about her actual actions as governor of Alaska...actions which have been PROVEN to be lies...yet she keeps repeating them. Palin has been kept off limits to any interviews or questions, which is certainly NOT reassuring and raises red-flags about her actual ideas, abilities and competancy should she become VP or worse yet, our president! I once thought of John McCain as an honorable man, and I do respect the ordeal he went through as a POW, however he has let himself be manipulated by the GOP into choosing Palin for his running mate and has also gone along with the Karl Rove/ gutter campaign tactics the Republicans are once again lowering themselves to. Their choice of Palin, their continued lies and their phony outrage yesterday over the "lipstick on a pig" remark... which they claim Obama made in reference to Sarah Palin... just shows how desperate the GOP is to keep the focus off the TRUE issues of this election. The GOP conveniently ignores the film clips of McCain HIMSELF using that very same "lipstick on a pig" expression TWICE in recent months while talking about Hillary Clinton's economic plans. And where was the outrage last spring when a McCain supporter asked him "What can we do to stop the b---h?" (referring to Hillary) and McCain just kind of laughed and said "Good question". The MOST pathetic thing about the Republicans and their repeated lies, double standards, phony outrage and slimy campaign practices is that so many idiots are falling for it! Wake up, people! This election is too important for our nation's future to let yourself be taken in and fooled once again by the Republican smear tactics. Say NO to 4 more years of Bush-like rule, because that is exactly what we'll get if McCain and Palin get elected. As they say, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig!

To those of you who state it is not a school's place to teach children about sex, last time I checked, the topics of puberty, human reproduction, sexually transmitted diseases, and fetal development all fall under the subjects biology and health, so of course they will be taught at school, just like photosynthesis and skin cancer are taught in those classes.
What IS the PARENT'S responsibility is teaching your child your morals of all of those things. Seems to me that many parents are failing in that regard, including Palin.

And I forgot to mention: Governor Sarah Palin, the self-proclaimed anti-earmarker, actually earmarked almost $200 million for Alaska in the past year. Lying hypocrite.

Typical liberal media statements below.
It's the only thing that Democrats have left...to smear without substance.
Name calling, media quoting, blah, blah, blah...we've heard it all before, so phut the shuck up.

Anonymous

Reread my comments. You missed the point entirely. No one, including Palin and McCain, are going to deny anyone the right to an abortion. My point was they stick to their personal convictions and believes regardless of the political backlash. That is what makes a good leader. The ability to not to yeild to popular opinion when the right thing to do is unpopular.

Anonymous

YOU are a brainwashed idiot who has been baptized at the altar of Karl Rove, Bill O'Reilly, Fox News,etc,...like all the other holier-than-thou Republicans who continually blame the "liberal" media for influencing anyone who states a different point of view than you, or anyone who says anything at all to disagree with your own "smear without substance, name calling, media quoting blah blah blah" Republican party. Unlike you, I am able to think for myself. So, right back at ya: Phut the shuck up yourself!

Anonymous

OK. I re-read your post. I would still like to know how YOU know that if "Obama's daughter" was in the same situation as Palin's she would "have had an abortion and we would never have known about it"?! And Sarah Palin most certainly IS against reproductive rights, which is one reason why the Republicans chose her...to balance out the religious right's dislike of John McCain.

Anonymous

keep reaching, but on the anniversary of 911 this rag chose to run an article on immigration, and how muslims are getting a raw deal, on their front page, and the pain dealer ran a story on the rockettes, the liberal media absolutely hates america as we have today, they all say we have to be sensitive to the feelings of the rest of the world and we as americans should be sorry for all the things we've supposedly done to the world and should be sorry. The world be d*mn, I'm a proud american and am proud of what our country has done in the wake of 911. I don't care what europe thinks of us as long as they fear us. the register and the pain dealer do a disservice by not running 911 stories on the front page but all liberals would rather hide their heads in the sand and not stand up to any bully, vote mccain palin

Anonymous

Yeah, you are probably right she would not have had an abortion. I forgot that Obama is an Arabic Muslim (So does he from time to time). And we all know how "forward" thinking that bunch is, especially when it comes to women’s rights (reproductive or otherwise) They would have cut off her head, burned her at the stake then stoned her or something equally barbaric.

Nice use of the typical liberal debate tactic. Ignore all the important points you were blown out of the water on and twist some tangential minor point used illustratively until your original inane blathering is no longer the topic of focus. Nice work Adam!

In his innaugration speech said ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country, this surely didn't mean all the entitlements that you feel your country owes you, welfare food stamps and the like, Jfk was a war hero, not like John Kerry who called our soldiers barbarians, Jfk stood up to the russians about cuba and won, the democrats today would make a welcome mat for russia today, we can';t risk a confrontation, we must think what the rest of the world will think of us, we can't interfer with the russians, and finally in 1962 Jfk proposed that we cut peoples income taxes to boost our economy, even jfk recognized trickle down ecocomics. I would like to claim jfk as a great republican, because he would be with today,s republicans, certainly not today's democrat
