BLOG: The Phony Outrage Industry

Tom Jackson
Mar 23, 2012

I propose a new name for the politics industry, the industry that keeps thousands of Americans employed as full time politicians, political aides and paid political party officials. How about calling it the Phony Outrage Industry?

I thought about this when I read Bill Maher's description of how he deals with the radio show of right-wing blowhard Rush Limbaugh: "I find Rush Limbaugh obnoxious, but I’ve been able to coexist comfortably with him for 20 years by using this simple method: I never listen to his program. The only time I hear him is when I’m at a stoplight next to a pickup truck."

Mr. Maher's piece, "Please Stop Apologizing," is an enjoyable but probably futile editorial against the endless time that's taken up demanding that somebody apologize for one thing or another.

The latest controversy was about Robert DeNiro's quip at a fund raiser for Michelle Obama, where he joked, "Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?”

This, of course, was an affront to every right-thinking sentient creature in the Milky Way galaxy, and Mr. DeNiro was forced to apologize, sort of.

As Maher writes, "In the last year, we’ve been shocked and appalled by the unbelievable insensitivity of Nike shoes, the Fighting Sioux, Hank Williams Jr., Cee Lo Green, Ashton Kutcher, Tracy Morgan, Don Imus, Kirk Cameron, Gilbert Gottfried, the Super Bowl halftime show and the ESPN guys who used the wrong cliché for Jeremy Lin after everyone else used all the others. Who can keep up?"

Limbaugh recently got into trouble by referring to a law student, in the current controversy, as a "slut." That was offensive even by Rush's standards, and Limbaugh did apologize after days of criticism.

That hasn't stopped the ongoing social media crusade against Limbaugh that's designed to drive him off the air.

The crusade doesn't hurt Limbaugh, of course. He thrives on publicity.

I live for the day when someone will launch a national crusade against my blog. Someday, I hope to find the right words to offend Gawker, so that I can become a national figure, too.

Here's what I think the real purpose of the endless appeals to outrage.

This fall, the American people will decide a presidential contest. The showdown apparently will be between Barack Obama, currently pretending to be a Democrat while governing as a moderate Republican, and Mitt Romney, a moderate Republican currently pretending to be an extreme conservative in order to win the Republican nomination.

The only way to get people excited about such a choice is to fill them full of indignation about the other side.

The way that each side is spinning the contraception controversy offers a good example of this principle in action. An army of Republican partisans are pushing the notion that Democrats are trying to end freedom of religion and conducting a war on the Catholic church! Similarly, any Democrat will explain to you that the Republicans are waging a war on women, because all Republicans hate women!

The crusade against Rush is part of the Democratic Party's current "Republican war on women" meme.

@ OMG.LOL.WT_ :

Personally, I don't give a sh*t, whatever that rich Prozac-brained Nancy Pelosi said or didn't say; which video was shown or not shown on whatever cable network.

Bill Maher’s show on ABC was the only one worth watching because he had intelligent discussions with guests from different political and social backgrounds and viewpoints.

I didn’t believe that he should have been fired for his comments.

 Smith:

“We expected that when 94% of students oppose the policy the university would respect our choices regarding insurance students pay for – completely unsubsidized by the university.
“We did not expect that women would be told in the national media that we should have gone to school elsewhere.

From the actual transcript of testimony by Sandra Fluke, not an opinion. Notice that this was not a "freebie" as you state.

The Bizness

Goofus, many main stream Republicans actually thought that cap and trade was a good idea until for some unknown reason people like you think of it to be a bad idea. It is in the end a free market answer to environmental problems.

November India Golf

I am outraged that your dribble is published ....

OMG.LOL.WT_

6079SMITH, It was Nancy's daughter Alexandra that made the videos and they were shown on Bill Maher's show on HBO.

I agree that the way he was treated by ABC whether he was fired or cancelled was B. S. but he's doing good.  Still has intelligent discussions and above all, IT IS ENTERTAINING.

A few years ago Rush Limbaugh was detained for having a bottle of Viagra for which he did not have a prescription. He was returning from the Dominican Republic where prostitution with teenage girls and boys is legal. The reason Rush listeners are called "dittoheads'  is because they blindly follow this fat, pill popping, four time married draft dodger!

This and $9 a month contraceptives were both available to Fluke. When applying to a university especially one run by Jesuit Priests you are supposed to know what is covered in it's healthcare. How does one in the middle of a contract call for a change in that contract. Fluke is an operative of the democratic sleazeballs.

goofus

So Bucknut, in your expertise in slandering a man with untruths makes him game for censorship. Because of your bogus charges he should be eradicated from the face of the earth. You must agree with the new video on You Tube that advocates Kill Rush!!!!  FYI, I visit the Dominican Republic, the cigars are very very good.

By the way Rush smokes alot of Fuente cigars based in the Dominican and hosts a cigar festival in the Dominican every year

goofus

Cap and Trade was easy to debunk, just follow the money. How's the carbon tax on the airline industry in Europe doing, ROFLMAO coun tries are either not paying or susupending services!

bucknut36

To Goofus,

I do not make as much money as your idol "El Rushbo" I served 23 years in the United States Air Force. I was in the first Gulf War and I have been to Iraq. I have been married to the same woman for 23 years. We have raised 3 fine sons. I will match my character and integrirty against Rush Limbaugh ( or you) any day of the week!

Why did Rush need Viagra to smoke cigars?

@ eriemom:

Regardless, Ms. Fluke's testimony is just a small part of the bigger progressive picture under the heading of FREE.

POTUS Obama, Feb 10:

"As part of the health care reform law that I signed last year, all insurance plans are required to cover preventive care at no cost….We also accepted a recommendation from the experts at the Institute of Medicine that when it comes to women, preventive care should include coverage of contraceptive services such as birth control. … we know that the overall cost of health care is lower when women have access to contraceptive services… we decided to follow the judgment of the nation's leading medical experts and make sure that free preventive care includes access to free contraceptive care.

Economics 101: TANSTAAFL - There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

Do you think that your auto insurance premiums would rise if "free" benefits like oil changes and periodic new tires were included????

6079 Smith W

"I attend a Jesuit law school that does not provide contraceptive coverage in its student health plan."

- Sandra Fluke.

Well "duh."

Who cares what Mr. Limbaugh said?

IMO this woman is dumber than a board; a typical whiny Progressive.

@ goofus: In The Star Report, Mr. Clinton testified under oath that he was "mentoring" Ms. Lewinsky. LOL.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/icreport/icreport.htm

Seems like Mr. Clinton did some "draft dodging" too. So what's Mr. Obama's military service record?

Approx. 90% of the U.S. population never served in the military.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_percentage_of_US_population_has_served_in_the_military

I tend to agree with many who believe that if we hadn't been @#$% around the Middle East over the past number of decades, 9.11 would never had occurred.

Close all foreign bases and bring 'em all home!

goofus

Hey Bucknut, with your holier than thou attitude, shouldn't you be in church!!!!

Winston, I hope clinton wasn't mentoring with hand rolled cubans LOL

I see Winne is back...too bad. I thought he was moving, or was that just more of his bull. I see from his posts that he doesn't like black folks, no surprise. Where have you been the last couple weeks, washing your white sheets?

The Big Dog's back

You can add that he doesn't like women either.

wiredmama222
