Going prime time

Last night’s State of the Union address was expected to draw close to 6.5 million viewers on CBS, which is the very same television network that last Sunday had almost 30 million people watching the 56th Grammy Awards.

Perhaps President Obama should have opened his show singing with Beyoncé the “Drunk in Love” duet she and Jay Z wowed them with at the Grammys instead of the same old song and dance he and Vice President Biden have been performing the past five years — “Drunk with Power”

CBS, along with other networks, such as ABC, Al Jazeera America, Bloomberg Television, C-Span, C-Span 2, CNBC, CNN, Fox, Fox Business News, Fox News Channel, MSNBC and NBC broadcasted last night’s State of the Union address. The estimated audience for the president’s presentation was projected to be 35 million.

Of course, Nielsen —when factoring viewership — does not include watch parties and people streaming it live on their devices, the number might be closer to 35 million and 12.

That would top last year’s total, as the 33.5 million people who saw President Obama’s fifth State of the Union address helped make it the smallest audience for the annual speech since President Clinton’s last State of the Union address in 2000.

I’m sure you remember that speech, it was the one he did not have verbal relations with.

Sadly, for President Obama it’s not just the Grammy Awards that will overshadow him this week, as the NFL’s final kickoff this season takes place this Sunday between Denver and Seattle in Super Bowl XLVIII.

That’s downright considerate of the NFL to number their championship games to remind Brown’s fans how many times they haven’t been in it: XLVIII times.

Wait until the year after next year, Part I — Former Cleveland Indian Jim Thome, who is currently employed as a special assistant by the Chicago White Sox and hit 337 of his 612 home runs with the Tribe, will have a statue erected which will be unveiled Aug. 2 at the field formally known as Jacobs.

No word yet if after the Thome statue completes a 12-year stay in Cleveland if it will be moved to Philadelphia.

Wait until the year after next year, Part II — Day 6 and Mike Pettine is still the Browns head coach.

Speaking of football, last year I correctly predicted the Super Bowl would be won by the team that employed Coach Harbaugh. This year I predict the contest will be won by the team whose state legally sells marijuana.

Nothing says the president of the United States has to give his SOTU address on a Tuesday night as Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution states:

“He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient”

It’s time for the White House to set precedent for the president and every president after him and move the SOTU address to Sunday night, just like all the highest rated, once-a-year television shows that are shown on Sunday night, like the Super Bowl, the Oscars, the Grammys and TV’s award show for TV, the Emmys.

That’s right. Bid the show and that is what it is, a show, to the network that is willing to pay to be the only network to broadcast the most important speech the president gives to Congress and the United States every year.

The network who wins the bid will have to recoup the money it has spent to televise the SOTU address by hyping the event as only television can do.

This means the commercials advertising the Sunday night and time the SOTU address will air might be paid for by an official sponsor of the address.

Not during the address, but leading up to it. Such as:

“Watch the president address Congress and the nation Sunday night at 9, here on Syfy. This message is brought to you by Duff Beer, an official sponsor of the State of the Union address”

The main deal for the network with the winning bid is it should be for the publicity, not the profit. This is where the FCC would, could and should come in to make sure all the money over advertising expenses is donated to what this, that and all the other presidents have promised was one of their main issues — education.

Just to make sure the money gets distributed fairly to education, the FCC should designate the Ohio Lottery as the executor.

Would this be successful to gain more viewers? We’ll know in the future when the president, at the end of the SOTU address, drops the microphone and walks away.

Like you just did.

Well written! Well done!
Actually, I didn't tune in last night to watch. It's the first one I've missed in 20 years.
I've been hearing "Drunk with Power" so much it nauseates me anymore.

tk

I watched and listened to the State of the Union address as I always do no matter who the president is. Last night President Obama gave a great speech. Now if the congress will only get moving we could see things improving much faster.

coasterfan

Yeah, Congress definitely is a Stick in the Mud. One of the commentators mentioned that Obama proposed 21 things for Congress to address in last year's SOTU. Since then, they've only addressed 2 of the 21, and given him the hand in the face on the other 19. No wonder he is considering Executive Action, as other presidents before him have done.

I thought it was a good speech, too - very uplifting. What was noticeable was the lack of applause from Boehner and many of those on the Right, when the President discussed topics EVERYONE should support. Really, Boehner? You don't think women should receive the same pay as men, for doing the same job?

Re: "One of the commentators mentioned that Obama proposed 21 things for Congress to address in last year's SOTU. Since then, they've only addressed 2 of the 21, and given him the hand in the face on the other 19."

That is what happens since there is a three part gov't. The congress has to agree on the 21 things the president wants done and pass the bills. If they don't agree that it is a good thing it doesn't go anywhere. It was planned that way since the beginning of our gov't. It is a Democratic Republic, not a kingdom, where a king is put in place by birth, and rules for life. Some folks don't seem to understand that is how it was planned from the beginning. You don't dis the opposite "party" when you have control of both houses of congress and the presidency and tell them "we won' and ignore them till you lose one of the houses. You can't treat politicians of either party that way and expect them to go against their parties principals when you find you need them again. They won't buckle like that, either party wouldn't. No matter that YOU feel it is the right thing to do, they might disagree and actually enjoy saying no as much as you enjoyed saying we won.

Clinton learned that when dims lost congress and learned that he needed to work across the aisle. Reagan had neither house in congress and went above the congress, directly to the people who told congress to do what Reagan wanted. Both could convince both parties to work together. Neither bush could do that near as well, and obama doesn't even try. He is not someone who can convice leaders to do what he wants and make deals to get things done. Clinton, Reagan, bush 1 and 2, and obama are different in their abilities. Some got things done no matter what and some got a little done and another almost nothing.

The Big Dog's back

So pooh, it's a "good thing" when things don't get done? Really?

grumpy

Depends on what the things are. So if it is bad things, more foolish policies or suggestions, dman right it is good they don't get done. What a stupid question, piddle puppy. I said that in the post you responded to. Are you having reading comprehension problems again?

Another opinion on the speech, since you wish to opine on it. Here is one written even before the speech that seems to be what many people think of it.

People are fed up with the lies, and terd polishing by cheerleaders such as yourself. Even the media is calling the SOTU a rerun!!!
Obama has lost the blind following of the media, although not completely, and shooting himself in the foot will be shown more now.

If obama is the answer, just how stupid was the question?

Pterocarya frax...

Well actually Obama will be in the White House till January, 2017. I am looking forward to January 2015 when he will have a democratic house and Senate to back him up.

With four more years everyone will be on welfare from China. They are putting his picture on food stamps now. Are you Dumacrats crazy, every bankrupt city in America has been run by you. Enjoy!

I'm sure you'll recognize most.....

Pterocarya frax...

Haha...lol...proven by who?

Okay..I'm game...let's look at a couple:

"408) Obamacare website had only six enrollments in the first 24 hours
During the first 24 hours after the Obamacare website went online, only six people used the website to enroll in Obamacare." umm ok.

"331) Fined a runner $100 for running in Valley Forge
During the October 2013 government shutdown, the Obama administration fined a runner $100 for running in Valley Forge"

Great work Darwin. Lets impeach him for these lies!

Darwin's choice

Well, cheerleader, it's not my list, but you keep digging...here's some I found:
"We will go through our federal budget – page by page, line by line – eliminating those programs we don’t need, and insisting that those we do operate in a sensible cost-effective way."

"Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency.”

"The Cambridge police acted stupidly."

"USA producing more oil than ever before"

“I think it’s important for us to understand that the Fast and Furious program was a field-initiated program begun under the previous administration.”

“That’s what I will do in bringing all parties together, not negotiating behind closed doors, but bringing all parties together, and broadcasting those negotiations on C-SPAN”

“If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor”

“The NSA is not abusing its power”

“First of all, I didn’t set a red line,” said Obama. “The world set a red line.”

"My budget will cut the deficit by $4 Trillion over 10 years."

“Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions, and federal conscience laws will remain in place.”

"The Health Care Package will pay for itself.."

"Didn’t know Jeremiah Wright was Radical"

The hits just keep coming!!

JudgeMeNot

0-bamabots love failure.

grumpy

And they want to know why congress doesn't pass more obama failure. It is easier not to pass pi$$ poor laws, that to have to fix the failures of this administration, or any administration. That is why omnibus laws and one party rule sucks. They tend to be, and make pi$$ poor laws and policy, no matter the party.See the first 2 years of bush1, carter, and obama's first two years, actually all of their years.

coasterfan

The level of vitriol towards this president has always been stunning. He followed the most inept president in the history of the Republic, and Democrats, to be sure, weren't hesitant to point out Bush's failings, after watching Republicans do the same to Clinton. The difference is that Clinton was not a monumental failure, and Bush deserved the reaction he got.

So, Republicans, instead of being embarrassed at the monumental screw-up of 2000-2008, instead have spent all their energy in a fruitless attempt to prove that Obama is Hitler, the Anti-Christ and the worst president ever ....all rolled in one. So, we've had 5 years of making mountains out off molehills, invented scandals, all the while pretending that their own guy didn't leave a flaming bag of poop on the White House porch when he left office in Jan. 2009.

Of course, theirs is a party who has never shown any ability to keep things in proper perspective. Clinton gets to 3rd base in the Office with an aide? Impeach him!!! Bush ignores obvious warnings about 9/11 and lies about WMDs to gain support for an unnecessary war? Nope, no reason to impeach there...

They are also really, really slow learners. The Bush years turned a budget surplus into a $10,000,000,000,000 deficit, and wasn't the Recession of 2007-08 a lovely parting gift? Yet, they not only continue embrace the same economic policies that caused the recession, they've doubled down on those policies, thus assuring that the recovery has taken longer than it should have. And they - the anti-science, anti-education party - think they are the smart party. Bobby Jindal, Bob Dole and others would disagree.

Darwin's choice

Still polishing a terd coasterfan. All that previous history is exactly that, history. Present day leader/liar is sinking our country. You morons who've accepted the failure as standard are the problem, then cheerleading about it is beyond pathetic. How's that obamacare coming along? And, those skewed unemployment numbers? 49 million on foodstamps/government assistance of some kind, and your happy about it?
It's been five years, five years of circling the drain, all on obamas watch. Your pithy whining about bush is boring. Obama is failing to produce, my golden retriever could do the job as well as he. You keep trolling away, your needed, like those illegals, to keep your voter base up, but people have seen enough......

And, really, wmd's? You are nothing but another snake oil selling liar.

anthras

coasterfan says :They are also really, really slow learners. The Bush years turned a budget surplus into a $10,000,000,000,000 deficit, and wasn't the Recession of 2007-08 a lovely parting gift?

I do think that you are not telling the truth or are ignorant of the facts. When Bush took office the national debt was 6 trillion and when he left 8 years later it was 10.5 trillion an increase of 4.5 trillion over 8 years. The national debt went from 10.5 to 17 trillion in Obama's 6 years an increase of 6.5 trillion and he has 2 more years to build on that. It should also be noted that Clinton did have a modest budget surplus for a short time however the national debt did increase 2 trillion during his term in office.

At the end of Bush's first 6 years unemployment was 5%, inflation was under control and interest rates were good it was in the last 2 years that things got really bad it seems almost like there was some sort of a change that took place in the last 2 years.

You still say that Bush lied about WMD however if you wish I can post a very long list of Democrats that also said the same thing were they lying also or was it just Bush?

I just happened to think that there was a change in congress the last 2 years of Bush's term.

Pres. Obama, SOTU, 2014:

"Today, after four years of economic growth, corporate profits and stock prices have rarely been higher, and those at the top have never done better.

But average wages have barely budged. Inequality has deepened. Upward mobility has stalled.

The cold, hard fact is that even in the midst of recovery, too many Americans are working more than ever just to get by; let alone to get ahead. And too many still aren't working at all."

An incredibly accurate description of the abject failure of his past five yrs. in office.

The Big Dog's back

Yep, let's go back to trickle down economics. That worked so well.
