One of the premier golf tournaments of the season is slated for Sept. 10 at Sawmill Creek Golf Club. The 18th annual Don Billman Memorial Outing, sponsored by the Huron Chamber of Commerce, is a tribute to the man who founded the event in the 1980s and served as treasurer of the Chamber for nearly two decades, prior to his death in 1996.

The outing is one of the Chamber’s major fundraisers, with proceeds used to provide scholarships for Huron High School graduates.

One feature is the chance for a participant to win a new Chevrolet Cruze, compliments of Foster Chevrolet-Cadillac — for the individual who can win the grand prize for a hole-in-one on the No. 7 hole.

That happened several years ago when Huron realtor Chris Wechter knocked his ball into the cup on the 15th hole at Thunderbird Hills to win a new car.

Entry fee is $85 per player and a $10 discount will be granted for players registering by Sept. 5.

The fee includes golf, cart, lunch prior to play and a steak dinner following the event which has a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Perks for the players also include longest drive and other proximity hole prizes, mulligans and skins.

In addition, there is another opportunity to test the participants’ skills with an award-winning young golfer in “Beat the Kid” contest.

For more information, call the Chamber office at 419-433-5700 or email Chamber@huron.net  .

Montgomery hole-in-one
Scott Montgomery of Avon Lake is the latest to record a hole-in-one.

He used a nine iron to ace the 12th hole on the Thunderbird Hills South course Wednesday while paired with Dick Montgomery, Bob Schuer and Bob Schuer Jr.

Area trio advance in Junior Buckeye
Three members of the Lake Erie Junior Golf Association qualified for the Bi-State Junior Challenge next week in Pennsylvania.

Bellevue’s Isaac Hartley and Dylan DeWitt along with Huron’s Bo Pettegrew placed high in the Buckeye Golf Association State Championships at Norwalk’s Eagle Creek Golf Club.

Hartley tied for the runner-up slot in the 36-hole medal play event for players in the boys 16-18 age group with a 145 total on rounds of 71-74.

Pettegrew also advanced with 79-77—156 and DeWitt earned his spot with back-to-back 79s for a 158 total.

The medalist was Nolan Tisch of Smithville who carded out a sizzling 30-35—65 in the final round Wednesday after an opening 73.

The trio will have an opportunity to match strokes against the top junior golfers from Pennsylvania in the 54-hole event in which 36 are played Monday and the final 18 Tuesday.

Sawmill championships Aug. 17
The annual Sawmill Creek championship tournament is set for Aug. 17 with champions to be crowned in the Open and Senior (55 and over) divisions.

The format is 27 holes of medal play with the 18-hole morning round beginning at 7:20 a.m. and the afternoon nine at 1 p.m.

Lunch will be provided between rounds.

The event is open to any Sawmill Creek member, league player or staff and participants may compete in both divisions if eligible for an additional $10.

The entry fee is $60 for full members and $110 for league players which includes green fees.

For more information, call the clubhouse at 419-433-3789.

P.C. Elks plan scramble, Stageroo
The Port Clinton Elks Lodge 2014 has held a Stageroo for years to raise money for charities supported by the Lodge.

However, there is an added event for 2014 with an 18-hole scramble at the Oak Harbor Golf Club Aug. 16, followed by dinner and a casino night at the Elks Lodge.

The four-person scramble has a shotgun start at noon with an entry fee of $60 per person that includes, golf, cart, prizes and dinner (strip steak or chicken) at the lodge between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dinner is also available for non-golfers at $15 with advance sale only.

As for the scramble, there are men’s, ladies and mixed flights with hole prizes, skins and a $100,000 shootout also on the agenda. Two three day/two night vacation packages will be given away.

Entry deadline is Aug. 8 and for more information, contact John Bredbeck or Chuck Benes at the golf course at 419-898-1493.
