VIDEO: Get a taste of roller derby action

There is method to the madness.

Learning and understanding roller derby can be … confusing.

Short story: There are 10 women total on the track at the time, five from each team.

Four are blockers. And that chick with the star on her helmet? She's the jammer. She scores points.

The object of the game is to lap as many players on the other team as possible. For each opposing player the jammer passes, she scores a point.

There are hundreds of rules about how she can do that legally, and how her teammates can help her.

If you come to a game, someone will explain the basics — fan, derby girl, non-skating official. It's a great community of people.

Fair warning, it takes some time to understand it all. I've been playing a year and a half and I'm still learning.

If you want to skate or referee? We'll teach you that, too.

Check out the video clip we put together from scrimmaging at practice. I picked the most entertaining parts. I hope you enjoy it and it leaves you hungry for more.

Home opener Saturday, doors open at 6 p.m., whistle blows at 7 p.m. at the Erie County Fairgrounds.

Roller Derby....what a blast from the past. As a kid I used to watch roller derby on channel 9 out of Canada. Along with big time wrestling with Bobo Brazil, The Sheik and tag team midgets.

Just might have to catch the action for memory sake.
