Farrar stood up, but got it wrong

Matt Westerhold
Mar 23, 2010

First off, I think it's important to mention Sandusky city commissioner Julie Farrar showed courage in addressing the IMA group on Tuesday.

But ... she was so wrong on nearly every point she made.

Mrs. Farrar obviously was mis-led by the person who told her that I, and/or members of the Register staff secretly recorded a conversation with her. That would be an ethical breach for a journalist.

If the person who told "all of the commissioners" about a secretly recorded conversation really wanted to know if it was accurate, all that person had to do was call reporter Jennifer Grathwol. Or call city editor Cheryl Welch. Or call me.

Or call police Chief Kim Nuesse, for that matter. There was no need to hire a Lakewood law firm to answer that question.

But the person who told her the conversation had been secretly recorded obviously was seeking support for a "witch hunt." The Nuesse integrity probe launched by city manager Matt Kline has nothing to do with seeking truth and everything to do with a self-serving agenda.

The Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance did a huge public service to the community by hosting Tuesday's press conference. The IMA offered a great lesson to everyone about what it means to be civically responsible.

And one more thing: City commissioner Dan Kaman showed courage several weeks ago when he called for Nuesse to be returned to her job.

I think this is more like it, he ENJOYS controversy and KEEPS the stirring the pot. Does he have a degree? Sorry, I didn't realize that.

Sorry Mommy,
I should have made better decisions, but this girl named Kimmie (you should see her, so cute, you know, with the badge and handcuffs and all) has got me feeling a little funny down there. I just don't know what to do anymore. Maybe Mr. Phares can help me? I've heard how publishers of the Sandusky Register really understand how to deal with young people.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAH!

I have a degree in journalism and I think this approach to journalism is a joke! Just sayin.

Hey Matt...she did call you. She called you out in front of everyone. Gotta give her credit for that. Whether she was right or wrong about the allegation, sounds like she got you a little "ruffled". You can hear it in your voice. Wow! And you got a bit upset over one person confronting you. Wonder how you would've handled yourself if there would've been a public forum/meeting and you were confronted by all the CCW permit holders you published?
The "Mr. Westerhold" post is calling you out too. I hope that is your next editorial...defending yourself against those accusations. I would really like to hear what you have to say. Plus, maybe it will get you off your Nuesse bandwagon for a brief moment, but I doubt it. There is no doubt in my mind you have a personal interest in the Nuesse drama. That's all you can write about anymore. Why can't you wait until the investigation is complete? Why Matt? Perhaps it is because you have your neck stuck so far out right now, it's too late to turn back. Run for Crandall's seat Matt. I would love to see how well you do when faced with confrontation day in and day out. When Crandall, Murray, and Stahl are gone, there will be plenty of room for you and Else to jump right in. Of course, both of you would have to acquire an address here, then run back to your respective counties after stirring the pot.

You know after Westerhold got confronted by Farrar, he was looking all over for the "easy button".

The commissioners know what is going on ever inch of the way, and that is why Kaman stepped forward because there is nothing to report. As for the IMA, they assembled people giving them the impression there was going to be a recall and instead Murray backs them down and persuades them to do another investigation of which they are not trained to do. If Dardin was a good friend of Murray's, why didn't he talk to Murray before assembling people for a recall meeting? I think a lot of people were disppointed the action for recall was put on hold by IMA.

I had to watch the video 3 times, the first two times I heard nothing! Because I was so shocked just seeing what Farrar was wearing and watching her actions! How unprofessional of her to come to a meeting representing our city in warm up pants and a tshirt! She looks like a basketball coach pacing on the sidelines! How can anyone respect what comes out of her mouth if she is dressed like that at a public meeting? She is way out of her league, and proves it to us by her ranting, and unprofessional tone. As a citizen I am truly disgusted by that mentality. As a woman I am angered that you have disgraced other women. No wonder men think we are just a ball of emotions that don't belong in the work place and can never go head to head with them. Julie look at how everyone else is dressed and get a clue! Dress for success and show some class.

re: ref; power of the pen @ may 8th, 8:39pm

Good to bed? What does that mean?

By putting the complaints in writing, as in actual letters with stamps and envelopes or getting a petition to have the man fired for whatever reason, one can make a bigger impact. The reason one can make a bigger impact is because the letters would have to be signed with the person's real name and not some phony, ridiculous, give-me-a-break name. Example; crackhead and nine MM. I have to wonder why they refer to themselves as one a drug-user and the other a size of ammunition. No offense to them as people. Don't call me dufus or I'll call you duffer!

In other words, if so many people think the editor is so terrible, put your money where your mouth is and DO something about it or quit your griping for the sake of griping!

with so many questions on legal issues and the ongoing investigation of chief nuesse why did the top legal mind for sandusky not make an appearance? at $106,000 per year in salary(minus benefits) he should be on the point to assure everyone that these matters are being handled correctly. afterall, don icsman was at the fire station on feb. 26th. and now, he has disappeared, again.. amazing isn't he??

Anonymous

Thank you... I could not agree with you more. As a professional woman I too was shocked and outraged... she is what gives professional woman a bad name. You are a representing the city... surely if you can't at least compose yourself then at least look professional and not like you were running to the grocery store

Anonymous

Matt

You have a right to defend yourself when a public official is making allegations against you and your livelyhood. Agree or disagree with this whole convuluted mess... you do have to agree when commissioners are starting to believe rumors and blogs and that is their sense of reality we all should be very worried.

For all of you out there, like him or not I can't believe ANY journalist especially involved with this would be that stupid to record a conversation like that

Anonymous

While I agree this female acted out very emotionally, I must say that clothes do not represent a person. I am a professional woman as well. However, there is too much emphasis placed on outerwear than there is placed on people’s action in the workplace. I don’t think women should have to wear a “nice dress” to look professional. Additionally, I don’t think a “pretty pant suit” makes or breaks a professional woman either. There are CEO’s of successful Fortune 500 Companies who wear jeans and polo shirts to work. If anyone has done empirical research on this, they would have a greater understanding that “this ain’t your momma’s workplace anymore”. I would rather someone represent this town in blue jeans than a $400.00 suit. More people can relate to jeans or the sweatpants she was wearing over a business suit. Perhaps if we were living in the suburbs of West Cleveland she would be enticed to dress for success. But…dress does not equal success. Empirical studies have already proved that. Unfortunately – her emotional outburst was embarrassing. She is the only female on the commission. She could have still acted with courage – but with dignity. She failed.

Let's find out what people are thinking about a recall; Question with each commssioner's names listed below;

Vote for any of the commsisoners listed below who you think need to be recalled?

Anonymous

If I were in the audience with curlers in my hair and stood up to ask a question, none of the commssioners would even take me serious, and rightfully so. If you listen to Dennis Murray dressed in a suit and tie, and speaking in a calm and intelligent manor, you have a tendancy to believe what he says and put your trust in him. It is just human nature. If you look at Julie, ranting and unable to put an educated sentence together, dressed like it's Saturday morning and she is ready to do yard work, it is impossible to believe a word she is uttering and put any confidence in her. I thought this whole thing was a mess, just from reading everything, but with just this clip of her I am now embarassed and scared that she represents us. No I do not want to vote for someone "who is the common man" (or woman), because that folks is what you get, Julie Farrar, showing up to represent you with her track clothes on! Would you go to a doctor who walked in to examine you wearing dirty jeans and a tshirt? Or hire a lawyer who went to court in sweat pants? She could not even take the time to look respectable, for a meeting with the public, press and professionals.

Anonymous

I believe it's also an ethical breach of a journalist to always and only write articles on your own opinion... which mr. westerhold seems to be the going thing on everyone of your articles.

Anonymous

That mentality is exactly what is wrong with Sandusky! So if you live in Cleveland you should look nice but if you live in Sandusky you can dress down? Why? Because Sandusky is for losers? What are you saying? Whether you live in Sandusky or the West Suburbs of Cleveland, you must dress for success! It is called CLASS and RESPECT, no matter where you live. It has nothing to do with the area that you live in! If more people "relate to someone in jeans and sweats" than we are in big trouble, let's just keep this town run by classless, clueless, Podunk's that will bring a couple more fast food restaurants to town, instead of condos and marinas. I am in sales, and I challenge anyone to wear sweats and a tshirt, to outsell me, while I wear a professional dress. A person in sweats would never get the appointment, let alone a sale.

Anonymous

Matt, Since you are calling alot of people on the carpet, how about answer Julie's question. No matter how she phrased it, you have not answered in this editiorial, either.

Do you know anything regarding a recorded phone call between Julie and Kim?

Were you there if/when such conversation was recorded?

Anonymous

So what is this person's dressing track record as a public official on the school board? Did she ever rant at board meetings in the past....did the SR not cover her comments and positions since she was elected to the city commission based on her only other elected office?

Anonymous

I am NOT going to have anything on my face... and if all you haters would get over it and accept the fact that pointing out the problems in this city doesn't make you a bad journalist,it only makes you the target of the "hide their head in the sand bunch", you might help fix this city instead of screaming whats wrong with the way things are.

I AM NOT MATT'S MOM, but I wouldn't be ashamed of him if I were. At least he has the nerve to take a position in this town instead of writing the "fluffy" news you all must want to hear.

And lastly, there isn't a paper in the world that doesn't have an opinion about the "news". If you don't like one opinion, look for another. Sooner or later you will find something out there that makes you smile.

Anonymous

oh yeah, who ever wrote the comment about SR publishers and young folks.......so very juvenile.

Anonymous

In the past the SR reporters and editors were definetly "in bed" with the public officials at all levels. As a result a code of silence and "good feelings" was promoted among those who played the game with the SR staff. Now, even the SR employees have to measure up and be accountable to hold the publci officials feet to the fire. Let's not stop with the spotlight on the city, there are some of the same problems at all levels in the city and given that Julie Farrar served on teh school board, chances are that they behave the same way she does flyiing off reacting without thinking first.
What is the status of grades, size of the graduation class and how many expulsions and suspensions at SHS compared to last year if the uniforms were all that successful?

Anonymous

Hmmm....what did happen with the "Mr. Westerhold" blog?? I w-o-n-d-e-r....It was a good one though wasn't it =)

Anonymous

Boy, you can sure you have absolutely NO clue as to what is going on! You will soon have egg on your face right along with Matt, unless you ARE Matt? Or, maybe Kim?

Anonymous

Everyone here is talking about Julie flying off the handle?? Sounds like you are to me. What's that all about? In response to your blog about news papers having an opinion, you are absolutely correct. But....an opinion is one thing TOTAL OBSESSION is another! Matt is TOTALLY OBSESSED with this Nuesse thing! That is all you see about here anymore, if it isn't about Nuesse, it is about the clothes that Julie Farrar is wearing...now C'MON! People get all irate when people that oppose Nuesse speak but all is fine and dandy when Matt, the SR, and her supporters come on here and run their mouth's about things that they really have no clue about. My guess is, there is probably a handful of people that know the TRUE facts and are keeping it unknown to others until the investigation is over and there are dozens that come on here and ACT like they know it all when it is totally impossible that they do. There has been name, after name, after name, here that people have had to drag through the mud, for what reason? Seems to me that THIS is EXACTLY what Nuesse is looking for to get the attention off of her. If people like you and Matt Westerhold, Sandusky Register want to fall for her game....it's all on YOU! I am sure she is proud!

Anonymous

Now we all no why the School Board threw a party when she left.

Anonymous

You people get upset because this commisssioner or that commissioner didn't show up or didn't say anything. Now Julie showed up, spoke and you don't like what she wore, you don't like what she said. Give me a break! Why don't you get back to what this whole M-E-S-S is really all about...and that would be the perfect Nuesse...NOT!

Anonymous

Julie you have more "class" than most of these bloggers that have all the negative things to say about you, atleast you are woman enough to ignore! Keep up the good work and don't let them get to you. I know what it is like here....consider the source.

Anonymous

Now Sandusky Register gave Nuesse her very own special report section. Like I said, TOTAL OBSSESSION! SR loves all the fighting for their WOMAN.

Anonymous

Matt, are you serious??? If we want to know if this is true, we should call you?? You lied to Julie Farrar in that joke of a meeting the other night, so if I call you, you WONT lie to me? If it isnt true, then how did you get all this information well before anyone else Matt??? You still have not explained that.....you're a weasel and now everyone knows it...
