E-mail to Commissioner Dennis Miller Jr.

Matt Westerhold
Mar 23, 2010

Dear Commissioner Dennis Miller:

I am sorry that we have never had the opportunity to meet, but I wanted to take a moment to urge you to very carefully read the above captioned report. I hope you take the time to do that and question if this was indeed a fair and impartial investigation of the facts, or whether it followed the dictates of an agenda.

I also wanted to mention to you that I met a man at the city commission meeting on Thursday who shared with me his thoughts about this issue and others. He also mentioned he's lived in his home in the 1500 block of Shelby Street for 67 years and said there are eight vacant houses surrounding his home. I drove to his neighborhood earlier today, and sadly, it appears the information he gave me is exactly correct.

I wonder if the more than $40,000 spent so far on the Murman investigation and related expenses would have been better spent to protect our neighborhoods and secure our city's future.

Please feel free to call me anytime. There are a great many other concerns I have regarding this issue, and it would be nice to meet and talk with you about them. Thank you for taking the time to consider my request.

Sincerely,

Matt Westhover

To begin answering the question of what I feel we must accomplish, let me first share my thoughts about how the best elected officials accomplish great results.

When we go through difficult times, we tend to make a mistake; we look for a leader who seems to have, at hand, the solutions for our problems. We want this person to have the answers that will make hard and complex problems seem simple.

Today’s problems do not have simple answers. Rather than look for a solo performer, we need to support leaders that have the courage to face our problems for which there are no simple and painless answers. We need leaders that will challenge all involved people to have a greater understanding of the problems, to generate a creative list of solutions and then help choose the best available options. We have to revitalize our sense of citizenship and involvement to solve current day problems. We need to move forward with a consensus and incredible support for the chosen solutions.

This is to say that I do have thoughts about what I would like to achieve, but I must also be prepared to work with others to create the list of solutions and help choose the best options.

1. I would like to be the consistent and strong influence that causes Erie County to live within its income level and insure that we support the priority, the effective and statutory services.

2. I want to insure that our county establishes a solid and truly effective economic development organization with an action plan that includes:

a. Real and tangible regional collaboration between all governments and economic development organizations within the county.
b. The education of all people within in the County so they are familiar with the key elements of economic development and to request that they support our program by telling the Erie County story to all visitors to the County.
c. Target industry teams that talk to Erie County businesses and identify the trends and companies that can represent economic growth in Erie County.
d. To launch an effective strategy for the development of a new airport that will support the development of NASA.
e. A plan to take advantage of our wind resource to become a hub for wind.

3. I would like all cities, villages and townships within the county to feel they have recognition and support from county government.

4. I want us to courageously face long standing problems, such as jail over crowding, and find the best solution possible.
5. I want to be the strong and consistent influence that will drive us to become a leader in energy conservation and recycling.
6. I would like to help create the result where all populations in the county place great value in education, technology and the performing arts.

The SR deletes posts that are informative, but may be a little hurtful. The SR can leaves disgusting posts that people leave when someone dies or is assaulted, but attack a politician because he is a liar and they delete it. Chris Redfern is a liar and he does not belong in politics. Or maybe he does...I dunno...I hope one of his platforms is not family...because he is certainly not real concerned about that. I hope he does step down for good, it could be nothing but good news for us all!!

I wrote 3 days ago and asked all 4 candidates questions. I was not negative or nasty (as most of these comments by others have been, especially on Ferrell’s blog) in my questions. They were thought out questions which I think were important questions in order to know the candidates stance on how they will operate as a commissioner.

So far, the only candidates to respond to me are Mr. Hayberger and Mr. Printy. Thank you to the both of you. I might not agree with everything they wrote, but at least he replied! Is it that the other candidates don’t think they have to respond?

Look at it this way boys, you are going for an elected position (a job) which the tax payers (your potential employers) will decide if you get “hired” or not. Consider any questions from your “potential employers” as “interview questions.” If you choose not to answer them, then that only goes to show that you won’t listen to your “employers” once you get in office. So why should anyone vote for you? As of now, I know I will NOT be voting for Ferrell, or Shenigo because of their attitude towards the tax payers. We have enough of this kind of crap already at the state and federal level! It’s about time tax payers stand up to this kind of nonsense.

OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS WORK FOR US AND ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO US! ! ! If they don’t understand that, then they should not get elected, and if they are already in office, then they should be voted out. I WANT ELECTED OFFICIALS THAT LISTEN TO WHAT WE, THE TAX PAYERS WANT, NOT WHAT THEY THINK IS BEST FOR US. What do you think we are, children? GET OVER YOUR STINKIN’ EGOS AND GET TO WORK YOU LAZY *&^! ! ! ! ! !

If you can’t do that, then don’t run for office! ! ! Why bother?

Grubbe has split the Democratic Party. A Party Chair is suppose to be a leader and chair the meetings. Grubbe has played politics while being Chair. From the message on the pastor's answering machine, (what a disgrace), calling people liars, showing herself out in public, and using people to her advantage, Grubbe has to go. I hope Redfern does the right thing and appoints someone else to Chair the Democratic Party. I think that would make alot of the Democrats happy.

I have the "Redfern Letter" but Matt cannot have it.

Redfern can't appoint any one! The DEM central committee determinds who the chair will be. Most DEM county chair people throughout Ohio can't stand Redfern's arrogant personality. It's not Grubbe, just as it wasn't Giese. The problem is Redfern is the biggest wanna be in the universe

Anonymous

Redfern wanted Amy Grubbe to be Erie County Chair, because he didn't like David Giese. He wanted all the power, of which Giese wasn't ready to give up. Be careful what you wish for Chris!

Sen. Obama has campaigned on a premise of changing Washington politics and then he picks a three decades long insider for his running mate?

His campaign strategy appears increasingly confused almost daily.

I would have thought that a former or current governor would have been a better choice. He should at least have chosen someone who has some experience with running a state administration.

Kinda of the reverse of the 2004 Democratic candidates where Edwards was a one term Senator and Kerry was the long-time insider.

Your questions are what other people want to know but obviously just don't know how to word it or whatever. A lot of people CARE but they just don't fully understand politics nor do they understand what's going on in this County at their expense. Please continue to do the taxpayers a favor by asking these questions that deserve an answer. Thank you. (Maybe you should run for commissioner---I'm serious)

I do not see what some of these posts have to do with improving the e-paper! I would like the see the paper improved so I could read it! As it is, it is too small to read on my computer and when I try to enlarge it it is blurred. This does not happen on other e-papers I read. Like one of the psots said, he does not like actuall paper "laying around". I do hope some improvement can be made so I can view it. I have subscribed to it several times and could not view it! I do not understand what the MILLA posts got to do with improving the quality of the e-paper!!

Senator Biden is a great choice for VP. He's an honest, decent man with the wisdom and experience to make a great veep.

Still waiting on the answer how you stand on the Erie County home of which you did not answer the question. How about the ankle bracelet program?

Anonymous

If elected are you REALLY going to listen to the concerns of ALL citizens? Where do you stand on the nursing home issue? How do you plan on bringing good paying jobs into this County when so many have left?

Anonymous

Hey Cap'n, I'll give you my IP address (assuming you tell me how I can figure it out). What are you going to do after I reveal it? C'mon, big boy, please illumunate all of us...what are you going to do with another's IP address? Just curious. Thanks.

Anonymous

Joe, How do you feel about the situation with the Erie County home and solving the jail crisis? Are you for using the ankle bracelet program?

Anonymous

After Obama loses Ohio, and the Republicans take back the Erie County county commission, you won't have Chrisy boy to kick around. He's gone! The real Democrats will see to that!

Perhaps he and his buddy Ferrell can both get jobs for the first time in their lives.

Anonymous

You say that jobs, schools, seniors and the business community all deserve attention. We already know that so could you please elaborate? I also noticed that you did not promise to address any concerns of the citizens. Don't you feel this is important? You say you want our children to be able to afford to come home to live, work and raise their families here. I don't see this happening. People can not afford to live, work and raise families in a County that has become nothing but a tourist community full of waterparks and minumum wage jobs. What exactly are your plans to try and remedy this situation? What are your views on the nursing home issue? How do you stand on the jail issue? What are your views on the horrific amount of foreclosures in Erie County and why it took so long for the Common Pleas Court to try and remedy it? Your blog admits to the problems in this community but does not elaborate on any proposed remedies you might have.
